Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd really rather we not do that thing where we start discussing whether or not a topic was worth discussing, because all it does is extend that topic further and make people more agitated.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I've missed the black scales. The rainbow were fantastic and meaningful but this feels like coming home.

I just worry the rainbow might have been more poignant for my platitude speeches.

I agree that Ben in the role of Steven Strange does make for a predictable performance to anticipate. Much like David Tennent being cast as Kilgrave. Doesn't meant it won't be high quality, its just not the kind of exciting casting you'd expect from MARVEL at this point; Chris Pratt as Star Lord and Martin Freeman as a villain in Civil War.

I still enjoy the fan cast of Pedro Pascal as Strange. But I don't think Ben has grown stale as an actor yet; wisely he only dips into tentpole roles to avoid oversaturating his performance.

I didn't know Freeman was playing a villain. I thought he was just going to be a character attached to Black Panther.

I believe that white racism is the only racism that can have a meaningful impact on the lives of others in this country, and thus the only one worth discussing in the context of said country.
Very unhealthy, Wackd. But kudos for being upfront about it.

Hope he does adopt the fancy collar (fur or otherwise) at some point. It really gives him presence.

Lee Pace as a deep-throated genocidal megalomaniac is by far and away the weirdest thing Marvel's ever done, casting-wise. Nothing will ever top it.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up][up]I wouldn't call that unhealthy.

I'd call it an accurate assessment of the forms of race-based discrimination that most of the western world has ingrained in it at a systemic and cultural level.

@Whowho-

That's kind of my thought too. I guess it's a missed opportunity for more "diverse" casting and it is a case of "knowing exactly what you'll get", even though he's quite well suited for the role. Although for what it's worth, I'm not sure any Marvel casting really stands out as being unexpected based on the actor's history. And that's not a bad thing because the movies/shows have been well cast.

As far as racism goes, I think part of Cumberbatch's hatedom is in response for his being cast as Kahn in the new Star Trek film. Although I'd really blame J.J. Abrahms for that. And besides the whitewashing issue, it was overall bad writing. And to some extent, casting him part of the (obvious) twist (tweest?).

Actually, I'm not sure where I heard that he's playing a villain, it might have been speculation.

Would be great though, he plays malice and anger Frightingly well.

I feel like Cumberbatch is probably in a position where turning down roles is a thing he can do, and so a bit of the blame falls on him for doing the movie instead of telling those in charge "I'm flattered but also totally wrong for the part, please give it to an Indian man instead."

Plus he's got the whole "average guy" vibe. There really ought to be more examples out there of evil characters with the face and voice of a normal, unassuming person - it can very unsettling.

@Wack'd-

I understand that argument, but the level of anger against him seems rather disproportionate.

And with that specific example, it's not just that he was miscast as Khan. Khan shouldn't have even been in the movie in the first place/the whole twist and related plotline was bad.

Like I think a far more egregious example of what you're talking about is Emma Stone being cast as a biracial woman in Aloha. Egregious because Hawaii is filled with people who would actually fit the casting and because there's no twist angle that slightly justified Cumberbatch's casting. But she doesn't seem to have gotten anywhere near the hate as Cumby.

Just my opinion, but Cumberbatch has never seemed like an "average guy" to me, especially since he's famed for playing detective masterminds or all-ruling dragons. Average guy vibe is more from Chris Pratt or such.
