Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I mean.
You can date people of different races and still be racist.
But yeah, no, the argument that they're racist because they were in a movie as slaveowners is dumb.
Clearly they're racist due to an educational system, social atmosphere, and media culture that makes it impossible to be white and not have racism as a sort of background radiation in your brain.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I am, but I get the impression that the way I'm using the word racist is very different from how you're interpreting it.
Like. Even if you don't want to, even if you know it's wrong, most white people will still make assumptions about non-white people they see in passing, that they see in media, that they hear about. I know. I'm white—well, it's complicated, but I'm a light-skinned guy raised in a mostly-white neighborhood. That sort of shit is baked into me too, and I still do it reflexively. It's a tough thing to fight. I'm not passing judgment or calling anyone a horrible person for that sort of thing. Just acknowledging it.
Obviously racism works differently in different places that I can't speak for, but, y'know, they have cultures and media and educational systems and historical backgrounds that I bet make the way racism works pretty similar.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Maybe Wong'll be white too. Then the movie will have no problem with stereotypes at all.
Racism is a subset of prejudice. It's the AIDS to prejudice's HIV. The line between them is very thin and difficult to place. But having presuppositions and ignorant preconceptions about people tends towards the latter.
To get back to the original point, though, it is very possible to date a person of a different race and still be racist.

Which is amusingly racist.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Do you know what I come to the Marvel Cinematic Universe thread for guys? Discussions about the Marvel movies. Not discussions on racism and prejudice which is why Whack'd bringing it up at every opportunity annoys me. If you want to discuss racism and prejudice we have a thread for that.

"War without fire is like sausages without mustard." - Jean Juvénal des UrsinsYeah, no, I definitely let this one get away from me. I'm sorry. That's entirely my fault.
All that said, I do think that there are times when discussions of race are relevant here, and I'll try to restrict my dips into the topic to those times.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. It's gotta be briefs, right? I mean, you're doing jumps and flips and shit, you need something stopping your junk from flying everywhere.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I sure hope not, because I'm yellow as a daffodil and part of my family is quite openly racist to the point of having purposely given subpar service to people because of their race, and I don't think that kind of behavior should be excused just because they're not white.
Probably because we're not actually talking about it with respect to the MCU anymore.

Or, rather, I regret using it as a launchpad for conversation rather than the brief aside I originally intended it as.

Ah, sorry. Mentally skipped a groove.
I mean. I don't really think whether or not Dr. Strange is white in the comics should impact whether he's cast as white in the films. In the midst of the millions of other pieces of meaningless trivia the film's going to rearrange or ignore, they could do worse than change how much melanin Strange has.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.
