Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Ra's wasn't actually a commentary on anything. It subverted expectations but didn't say anything about why those expectations are fucked up.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. It's strange (pun intended). Chiwetel Ejiofor has been cast as Modo and Michael Struhlbarg is playing Nichodemus West, who also has the "friend turned evil' angle in the comics that the movie seems to be going for with Ejiofor's Mordo.
So no clue on who Mads is playing. Unless maybe he's Dormammu?

I think they might do it the way they did Sinestro in Green Lantern: starter villain plot (comparing Mads' character to Hector Hammond, since I hope they don't rush Dormammu like GL did Parallax) in which the arch enemy is still good, drop a few hints that the archenemy is dissatisfied and going to switch sides, have him do so at the very end to set up a sequel.
I guess it's also First Class Magneto, though Sinestro fits a bit more for the setting.
On the other hand, if it turns out Mads is the real Mordo I think I might throw something at the movie screen. If it turns out Mads is some kind of fake Mordo, I won't throw anything but I will wonder what the point was.

As for that particular instance, it has more to do with society's general illiteracy towards autism than Cumberbatch himself having an exceptionally unsavory opinion of people with autism. Also for the most part it's a more rarely-brought up example among a sea of "your fave is problematic"-style complaints because he's popular. The only reason Wackd and the rest of us even know about that particular incident is because someone here actively went looking for it. It's hardly a common criticism of him.
The more consistent other complaint that I see about him is that he's badly typecast in this role. You know exactly what you're going to see from him, no more and no less, in contrast to other instances where a pleasant surprise usually awaits viewers.

If this post is implying he made the autism comments in 2011, why are they being brought up now, 4 years afterwards, and why were they not mentioned in relation to any of the movies he's done before Dr Strange?
If I interpreted wrong, then I apologise and feel free to ignore me.
Cortex should take a 12-step plan off a 10-step pierA third complaint I just remembered people bringing up about Cumberbatch is that the Strange role is apparently whitewashed, and that for him to accept the role instead of letting a nonwhite person have it is obviously a deliberate act of hatred on his part against nonwhites. Which doesn't make sense to me on multiple levels, considering the character was explicitly modeled after the very white Vincent Price.
Not to mention a lot of the arguments for Doctor Strange's not being white is pretty specious or based on ignorant stereotypes, like a few choice panels where Dr. Strange has almond-shaped eyes being proof he's actually of East Asian descent. Despite various things like Benedict Cumberbatch having eyes that look exactly like that in real life, that particular artist giving almond-shaped eyes to all of his characters regardless of race, and the fact that Strange has blue eyes and those are not common in East Asians at all.

"He was cast in 2011? Huh. "
Hmmm I was under the impression these comments were made recently and for that I apologize.
Must have something to do with being the first time I have heard of them and the most common complaint I hear is "Waaaah he's everywhere!"
But then I don't hang out on Tumblr...
Those comments got mentioned here just after he was cast and yes they originated from Tumblr.
I have seen them mentioned by literally no one but you.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Oh, wait, Tumblr was complaining about what Cumberbatch said? Well, clearly that means he was completely in the right. Sorry for wasting everyone's time.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Actually I first heard about it on here. It was a thing in the YMMV page for the movie but I personally deleted it since it was not a particularly common criticism. The reason the vast majority of people have a beef with Cumberbatch really is just general Hype Backlash or Typecasting.
Political Correctness Gone Mad gets more attention but it really is a Vocal Minority view, or at least a non-unified soup of them. Not an excuse to whine about how "the evil SJ Ws ruining everything" again.
Sigh, you're doing it again.

I heard somewhere that Benedict Cumberbatch playing a slave owner in 12 Years a Slave means he's a racist in real life. I don't agree with this, but I did have the amusing mental image of Benedict Cumberbatch saying "I'm not a racist, …But I Play One on TV."
@ Wackd: I wasn't aware that the Autism comments had been brought up with regard to his previous movies, so I apologise for thinking they hadn't. This is the first I've heard of them, so I thought they were a recent thing.

If the film contains actually commentary on the race change the way Iron Man 3 did I think I'll be okay with it.
