Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yep, the first episode of AOS mentions "Extremis," which is from Iron Man 3.

Then I guess Iron Man 3 is in 2012. That was one of the things I wasn't too clear on. Other than that I think the rest of the stuff is fairly accurate.

[up] That seems like a lot of time for the first season of Ao S to occur over.

It does but I'm pretty sure Winter Soldier is in the first half of 2014. AOS and Thor 2 would have to happen at some point in 2013 or early 2014.

Could Iron Man 3 still be Christmas 2013?

It could. It would go:

  • Iron Man 3 (Christmas 2013)
  • Agents of SHIELD Season 1 through "End of the Beginning" (Jan-April 2014)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 2014)
  • Agents of SHIELD Season 1 "Turn Turn Turn" through "Beginning of the End" (April-May 2014)

Thor 2 also has to take place in there somewhere. It could work. It just makes the timeline a bit cluttered.

We do have an episode explicitly dealing with the fallout of Thor 2.

Namely, SHIELD is running cleanup after the shenanigans that happened in the final fight in the beginning. Don't remember what episode that is, but it does give that movie a fixed spot in the timeline.

Okay, then it goes:

  • Iron Man 3 (Christmas 2013)
  • Agents of SHIELD Season 1 through "The Hub" (Jan-Feb 2014)
  • Thor: The Dark World (Feb 2014)
  • Agents of SHIELD Season 1, "The Well" through "End of the Beginning" (Feb-April 2014)
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier (April 2014)
  • Agents of SHIELD Season 1, "Turn Turn Turn" through "Beginning of the End." (April-May 2014)

So courtesy of my bro, here's another theory born from a re-watch of Avengers Age Of Ultron.

Ultron's big plan was download himself into a new body made of Vibranium and Helen Cho's fancy skin stuff.

He starts the process, and is at least a little ways along before the combined efforts of Wanda and Helen screw that up. Then the Avengers steal the body. Shit happens, and The Vision is born.

But the thing is.....Ultron still downloaded himself into the body, at least a little right......and last time I checked, when you start downloading and then stop the process, the partially downloaded file is still inside the thing you were downloading it not.....

So say Oh, Crap! with me, because part of Ultron is inside the Vision's body, and nobody even knows it.

Why hasn't Ultron taken over? The Mind Stone might have something to do with it. When Thor lit up the body with energy, he energized the stone as well, and allowed Jarvis to fully integrate himself into both the body and the stone. In contrast, Ultron only got himself in there a little bit before it was interrupted. He can't do anything.....right now, but as you know a certain mad titan has decided to do it himself, and I'm guessing when he takes the stone, Utlron is gonna be back in business, in the body he'd intended for himself in the first place.

So, are y'all freaking out yet?

The point of putting Jarvis in the body was to thwart the Ultron programming.

And probably because Tony missed Jarvis.

Ok, but how do we know it worked. I mean, can we be sure it removed the Ultron programming from the body?

No, we can not.

I'm pretty sure they don't want to bring Ultron back after they went to all the trouble of killing off all of his bodies in AOU.

Basically, if this were the comics where they had more room to fill, yeah. That is definitely how Ultron would come back. Has come back before.

By my completely unresearched reckoning, seven Ultrons have come back via programming hidden in Vision.

Vision is part Ultron. He's bits of Ultron's personality and memories combined with Jarvis's personality and the power of the Mind Stone.

If it was just Jarvis alone it likely wouldn't be sophisticated enough to be a fully sapient android.

So, what are the chances of Ultron's personality waking up inside Vision?

Eh, probably not very likely.

Again, the Ultron aspects ARE already awake. They're integrated with Jarvis and named Vision.

Oh. I didn't know his Ultron side was integrated. That changes everything.

Guess my bro is wrong again.evil grin

Wait, how do we know that? I know Vision said he wasn't like Ultron, and he wasn't quite what Tony intended (though he's either close enough or better) but where did we get the Ultron part is totally integrated into Vision part.

Mark Ruffalo has some interesting stuff to say about Hulk's role in Ragnarok.

“He's on the run,” assured Ruffalo of the Incredible Hulk’s whereabouts following the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron. “I think that we carry that through. It's not just a matter of taking himself to some remote place and hiding. Now he's removing himself from humanity altogether. I'm not sure where we're going to head with that, but I'm sure that's probably still very much alive within him.” The two-time Oscar nominated actor then hinted that the two personalities might merge. “It's very subtle, but the Banner/Hulk consciousness is beginning to meld a little bit,” he teased. “Who decided to leave? Was it Banner or Hulk? It's not really in the [cinematic] mythology of Hulk up until that moment to be that conscious and pro-active. It's interesting, right?” Very!

Mark Ruffalo continued, “Yeah, I think it [will be fun]. I think it's really exciting where we could go with it. Now I feel like we're kind of in No Man's Land. I mean, the comic books have kind of broached the subject, but we're moving away from the traditional Hulk/Banner relationship. We're starting to mess with it a little bit.” As this direction has not been explored previously, he added, “Now we're going to see how far we can push the limits of it before people get sick of it!”
