Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up][up]I'm pretty sure the machine was vibranium-powered, not vibranium-made.

[up][up]It really wasn't that easily destroyed. It took two repulsor beams from Iron Man, Thor lightning, and a blast from an Infinity Stone to do damage, and even after that it still took two separate Hulk beatings. The only thing that definitively destroyed it Scarlet Witch telekinetically ripping out the power source, and I don't see where Ultron Prime's body should be immune to telekinesis even if it hadn't been already weakened.

That was a funny/badass visual metaphor

"Hey wanna know how I felt when my brother died?"

Shame she abandoned her station and one of the ultrons triggered the colony drop. You had one job, Wanda.

This is a movie, man, emotional satisfaction first, we can think about logical concepts like "manning your station" later.

Fair enough.

Plus, again, really good visual metaphor.

Still, Wanda's telekinesis has to be pretty strong if it can warp and rend Vibranium.

She picked up and ripped apart a handful of Ultron drones all at the same time.

That's quite a lot of force that she can focus to a single point.

Wanda's pretty damn powerful in the comics. I wouldn't be surprised if they made her one of the more powerful Avengers here - she just hasn't gotten a good chance to show just how powerful.

I wonder if they'll show off just how powerful Quicksilver can be, too! He's-

[up] Hey, maybe he went so fast in his last scene that he actually went forward in time, and that's when we'll see him again! Of course, he'll also have to eventually return to his time of death, otherwise 'Pietro, you've created a Time Paradox!'

So basically, Quicksilver is Clara Oswald.

You'd think she'd learn to read English by the time of Civil War, considering she's working for the Avengers.

How big of a timespan is it from AoU to Civil War, anyway? Real Time?

Hey, man, learning to read a different language especially in concerns to a document with a ton of difficult words is hard.

[up] Probably within a year because Ant-man doesn't take place too long after Age of Ultron and Ant-man's ending kinda leads to Civil War.

[up][up][up]We don't know for sure how long the ending of Age of Ultron took place after the events of the main film. I assumed at least a few months had passed since they already had a new facility up and running.

Less than half a year...since that's roughly the time Jemma spend off-planet and Ant-man happened before Fitz managed to pull her back.

And yes, we are now in real time with the movies and Ao S...but not with the Netflix shows and naturally not with Agent Carter.

...of course we're not in real time with Agent Carter. That would be super weird if we were.

Jessica Jones takes place after Daredevil, but also sometime in the winter. So perhaps Daredevil takes place in later 2014/early 2015 and Jessica Jones in late 2015?

Jessica Jones is early 2015. It's explicitly February when it starts. Daredevil is probably spring or summer of 2014.

It could be February of 2016.

The newspaper talking about Reva's death is dated February 2014 and several people say it's the one year anniversary.

Daredevil is at least set two years after the Battle of New York. I wasn't sure if it was set in 2014 or 2015 beforehand, but since it is obviously set before Jessica Jones, and Jessica Jones is definitely set in early 2015, I guess I now have my answer.

So Civil War is about the rise of the proletariat overthrowing the wealthy class? Looks like Commie-smasher Cap has a nemesis...

I think the timeline is this:

  • Late Spring or early summer 2012: The Avengers form and the Battle of New York occurs.
  • Unknown period of time in 2013: Coulson puts together his team and AOS season 1 starts.
  • Christmas week 2013: The majority of Iron Man 3 happens.
  • Unknown time in 2013 or 2014: Thor the Dark World happens.
  • February 2014: Jessica breaks free from Kilgrave's control.
  • Late spring 2014: The Winter Soldier occurs. Agents of Shield season 1 ends shortly after.
  • Summer 2014: Daredevil season 1 happens.
  • Late 2014: AOS season 2 starts. The Avengers reform and start to battle Hydra.
  • February 2015: The present portions of Jessica Jones take place.
  • Spring 2015: AOS starts its Inhuman plot.
  • Spring or early summer 2015: Age of Ultron occurs. AOS season 2 ends roughly a week or two later.
  • Late Summer 2015: Ant-Man takes place.
  • Fall 2015: AOS season 3 starts.
