Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The problem was anyone better would likely have aroused suspicion.

Random terrorists? Poor stupid playboy, but he got what was coming to him. High Grade Minions? Well now who just inherited a company and could have wanted him dead?

Nobody suspected it when Howard got killed.

Howard also FOUNDED S.H.I.E.L.D.

His son was a rich playboy who, while kind of a dick, didn't warrant vestiges of HYDRA or anyone else like them assassinating him.

Yeah, I mentioned that. It's another reason why it's unlikely Stane was behind it - important or not to HYDRA, if Stane had the pull in HYDRA to be behind them killing Howard as apposed to them doing it for their own reasons without his input, he would've had resources he clearly didn't have in Iron Man 2.

I always think that connecting prior villains and linking them to a Nebulous Evil Organization long after they've died is a bit of an Ass Pull.

"Stand was cool, but he died. How can we make him more grandoise? Oh yeah, turns out he was member of HYDRA!"

On that note, I really hope they don't do that with Ross in Civil War. Not only would it make the Consultant not make sense, but I really like Ross being who he is with all his vices without it turning out that an evil organization was behind everything he did.

I'm pretty sure Ross isn't going to be HYDRA, though I could see Stane being.

Marvel please don't turn "he was a HYDRA all along xD" into the new midichlorians.

In my head canon, it was mostly the brief period during which Stane had sole control of the company which made him into a power hungry criminal. It must have p... him off when Tony actually got his act together and he mainly let him live because he was such a good inventor. But I guess he felt that it cant go better than the Jericho.

[up]x4 I agree that Ross shouldn't be Hydra.

If Hydra needs to have a hand in the Sokovia Accords, what I could see them doing is having Baron Zemo (obviously without people knowing about any ties to Hydra he has) on the UN panel that enforces the Accords.

If they don't want to end the movie with Captain America and the all Avengers that sided with him dead, in prison, or on the run, then exposing Baron Zemo might be a way to do that.

Now that the year is nearly over, I am starting to really relish in the excitement for the upcoming year. More Agent Carter! Civil War!!!!! (I love the Captain America Franchise). Ao S should delve into the secret warriors. Even Dr. Strange sounds more and more interesting by the minute. The more they talk about the visual aspects and the more talent they cast, the less I am worrying about the writers they picked.

I am also starting to wonder again which genres Marvel intends to explore next.

Ao S should delve into the secret warriors.

It's slowly building up a team. Currently it's two Canon Foreigners and Quake, but the team should expand now that they've had their first mission.

[up]They cast Slingshot for the second half of the season.

Or at least, they cast an actress and are claiming that she's playing Slingshot. They haven't been above blatantly lying in their casting announcements in the past...

[up]I've also only found one article claiming that, though. Usually for casting announcements, there's a slew of articles, but this time, there was only one.

Okay, that's pretty awesome, given the subject of this thread.

Yes, they are!

I loved that scene because it was the kind of mistake that perfectly demonstrates the character's inexperience with hands-on violence. It showed that, even though he's charismatic and brilliant, he's not very experienced in doing things directly.

Lego sets can be iffy. A character might be included in a set not because they're in that scene, but because that's the only set with an open character slot and they don't fit in the other sets. Props and stuff might be added because it's fun, or because their info is not 100% accurate (misinterpretation, deleted scene). Like with second Hobbit film, one set had Beorn with Gandalf in the Dul Guldur set, and they found a magic ring, but that was not in the theatrical version of the film.

I would trust Giant-Man being in Civil War, though It's not a huge surprise.
