Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

J'Son's already been Jossed as Star-Lord's dad though. Kurt Russell as Starfox, Mar-Vell, or Adam Warlock though, hmm. Of those three I can see him being Mar-Vell the most.

Wasn't the Mar-vell rumor squashed already?

Eh Maybe said that he had an exclusive scoop that Peter's dad was Captain Mar-Vell, and then James Gunn went on Twitter and publicly debunked it.

Oh. Also that thing about how Xandarians would definitely recognize Kree DNA. D'oh.

[up] You're just hearing about this now? I mean, in the movie, they pretty much disqualify J'Son by the fact that they call Quill's father something "very old, that hasn't been seen in a long time." And Peter's mother said that he was an angel "composed of pure light." That pretty much disqualifies J'Son, since, you know, he's just a regular humanoid alien.

But also, James Gunn doesn't like J'Son and I don't blame him. He's kind of lame. And he made a lame villain, too.

[up]I just assumed they'd adapt the Spartoi into a far older race.

Nope. That's why everyone's been trying to guess who Star-Lord's father is - because all we know is that it's not J'Son (and not Mar-Vell, because Gunn already Jossed that, too).

See, my guess is that J'Son will make an appearance pretending to be Peter's father, but then reveal that he's not his actual father and someone else is.

I'm guessing Peter's dad will be the same species as Thanos, who's probably not technically a human subspecies in the MCU.

[up][up] Who, wouldn't you know it, was with the Celestials for a time.

[up] His brother Starfox seems to be a popular choice, and is the one I think it'll be.

That reminds me. Whoever he acts more like personality-wise, I have to think that Peter's father will be Thanos' brother, both because of it doing more to give weight to Thanos as a character and because of all the great Star Wars jokes it would elicit.

I'm not going to be able to take Starfox seriously with that name.

[up][up][up] The problem with Starfox is his powerset makes him...super creepy. I mean, like, he has the ability to stimulate the pleasure centers of anyone around him. As you can guess, this makes him sound kind of rapey. (And, in fact, in one issue of She-Hulk, he was sued for rape, even though it turned out to be a trick by Thanos.)

[up]Technically, his real name is Eros.

Well technically his name is Eros.

Which is even harder to take seriously. [nja]

But yeah. I wouldn't adapt Starfox's power set or if I did, would downplay that aspect.

Because yeah, it's not good to have as a hero a guy who has the same power as the Purple Man and uses it in the same way (but played for laughs/bro coolness)

What about that time he tried to make the Hulk so aroused he would de-Hulk but just got Punched Across the Room for his trouble?

Yeah, Starfox should probably have his powers toned down (if not excised completely) if they use him.

Of course, they could play him as a legitimate creep and a villain (I mean, Nebula can certainly be a villain, but is she enough to carry the film's conflict by herself?).

But yeah, playing it for laughs...well, James Gunn has already had some accusation of misogyny thrown at him. That would not help his case.

Not to beat a dead horse, but although as noted, it was revealed (rectonned?) that it was Thanos framing him, there was basically a storyline in comics where Starfox does to She Hulk what Kilgrave did to Jessica Jones (in the Netflix series) but played for laughs.

Like I don't want to get polemical, but that and the infamous Carol Danvers pregnancy plot lend a lot of weight to the idea that Jessica Jones is criticizing something that really exists.
