Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

RE the discussion of Black Bolt, the idea I had was him mostly communicating like telepathically and have it so that he doesn't open his mouth but other characters hear him with a slight reverb. And then have the rare scene where he talks and stuff happens.

On a related note, if/when the MCU gets a telepath, I want them to do what has been done through Jean Grey in the comics- have them communicate with Groot through telepathy and they'd "hear" him talking in an extremely eloquent and philosophical manner.

That sort of takes away what's special about Black Bolt: the fact that he rarely, if ever, talks. Sure, his wife understands him telepathically, but nobody else can hear it.

I still hope that they don't go for Von Diesel for the role as Black Bolt. I want an actor, who can really act with facial expressions and mostly his eyes alone. My favourite would be Matt Bomer, but everyone, who has something close to his abilities would work.

But then, I also hate the idea of Emily Blunt as Captain Marvel.

Emily Blunt is awesome. She can be an Action Girl, or she can bring great drama and intensity on screen, and even humor.

I think she'd be great although I'd probably prefer Jessica Chastain or Bryce Dallas Howard who are the same person.

I love both Jessica Chastain and Bryce Dallas Howard, so either way, it'd be a win for me. [tup]

Emily Blunt has also passed on roles in the MCU twice already and will be hard to tie down into a multiple movie contract. I rather take someone less known.

Actually, Blunt couldn't take on the Black Widow role because she had a prior film (the quite bad Gulliver's Travels) that she had to do. She did turn down the role of Peggy Carter, though, so who knows.

My actual casting idea would probably be...

hm...

hang on....

Oh wait

My answer is the same as it always is

She's who I was thinking of for the hypothetical female!Thor (that's not Jane Foster).

Hmm. I'm conflicted about her. Like she's a good actress and seems like a great person but I almost wonder if she's too tall/imposing (not sure a better way to put this). Like as with the Ronda Rousey suggestion (although Christie can act) I have the problem that this is someone who starts out looking like a warrior as opposed to a normal (albeit athletc) person who is then Touched by Vorlons.

I know this sounds needlessly picky and I'm sure I'll like whoever gets the role assuming Marvel doesn't end up cancelling the movie.

I don't care about who would play a female Thor. I'll take any actress.

I'd be fine with Michelle as Female!Thor.

Also, for a less-imposing Carol, my first thought is always Samantha Wright. I really doubt she can act and they'd never cast her in a jillion years....

BUT SHE'S SO CUTE AND JACKED.

I've talked before about my desire to Rick Jones in the MCU (specifically in Captain Marvel). Thinking about it, I realized I wouldn't mind if he was gender flipped.

I'll only accept Rick Jones if somehow he saves the day through ham radio enthusiasm as Tony Stark sighs and pinches the bridge of his nose, wondering what his life has become.

No, no, he would totally be a part of a superhero forum these days.

In fact...he would probably be a part of this forum.

Also, I have no problem at all with a Ricki Jones.

Modernizing tech and science and media for adaptations is for the weak.

They'd better say 'transistors' a ridiculous number of times whenever Iron Man is on screen in Civil War or I will continue to spend money to watch these movies.

Oh yeah. Perfect. And I'd assume most likely a Starfox flavored dad, although he could just as convincingly be a grim J'Son.

Edit- Or a bit of both. Come to think of it, like Jeff Bridges as Stane, he'd be well suited to play a character who seems friendly and genial but is really a bad guy.

This is a weird news...so apparently nobody has talked to him yet, and he hasn't read the script either. They are just saying that Marvel intends to talk to him? What is the source of this one again?
