Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Wait, so the argument against genderswapping Black Bolt is that the Inhumans already have a female lead?
There can be two, can't there?
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.![]()

Good to know Jane as Thor doesn't let up on the phallic symbolism.
(I know you weren't actually responding to me, but I couldn't resist).

Three, then. Is three too many female leads?
If Marvel ever makes a Fantastic Four movie it should star Invisible Woman, She-Hulk, Medusa annnnnnnnnd Monica Rambeau.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersI'm not necessarily averse to the idea of a female Thor (I mean I'm totally on board with Jane!Thor- I mean casting Thor from the outset with an actress).
However, I think the two suggestions offered would be woefully miscast.
Thor is basically a combination of a Shakespeare play and High Fantasy story and I just can't see Michelle Rodriguez in that milieu. It's not a racial thing but it is kind of a nationality thing (like basically everyone in Asgard needs to be a Brit or at least a Fake Brit).
And while I think Natalie Portman would work great for the kind of Thor who is a (weak) human empowered by magic, she doesn't seem at all a good fit for a Thor who is a muscle-bond (this part may be optional) Boisterous Bruiser and Blood Knight.
Not sure if the Christopher Walken suggestion was a joke. But I'd say that while he may actually be a decent fit for the classic comics Thor comics, where Loki was old and ugly looking (no offense to Walken) he doesn't really fit with the film's Loki who is in Thor's age range and is the brains to his brawn.
Like basically, the only requirement is that Thor and Loki are about the same age and (I think) gender and (seem to be) the same race.

High Fantasy stories don't just happen in Medieval European Fantasy, y'know.
For example, a story could be High Fantasy set in a Wuxia setting.

I've often thought it was weird that there was a dude inhuman called Gorgon
And also weird that there was a Gorgon and a Medusa and these are just Inhuman names that have nothing to do with greek mythology or something.
Forever liveblogging the Avengers@higherbrainpattern- Obviously they don't (although Thor does). I'm just saying that I couldn't really buy Michelle Rodriguez in a role that's not in a contemporary or future setting. Like I don't think she would fit in a Wuxia setting either (and for that matter, neither would most of the cast of the Thor movie).

I have no opposition to most gender and raceswapping, but I find it sorta humorous that Michelle Rodriguez tends to come up the most considering she actually is against it.
Why not just genderflip everyone except the villains and make all of the villains white American men in suits and ties with cigars calling every other character "Toots" or "broad"?

My various fanfics.Exactly. And then no one will complain about Marvel's shallow pool of movie villains because they're all white men so who cares if they die anyway?

The reason for genderswapping is more female representation, right? But Marvel has a good excuse. Most of their prominent female heroes are at Fox.
