Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I mean, I think you can debate Chris Helmsworth's acting abilities. I'd say "well he just doesn't have much to work with" but I've seen him in The Cabin in the Woods, too, so I feel comfortable saying he cannot in fact act.
I'm not just saying that because of my well-established hatred of dude!Thor! I genuinely don't believe Helmsworth is a good actor!
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. He manages to pull off what I want to see from Thor, so I'm fine with him.
Who would you rather be Thor, Wackd?
Oh God! Natural light!I wasn't even trying to make it a thing. I just don't think he can act. Someone said Marvel only cast leading men who can act. So.
I probably would've cast Michelle Rodriguez as Thor, honestly.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.I mean, this is early in the MCU thing, you want Thor to be a big tent-pole franchise, Rodriguez has some name recognition.
And then once we're in the "Marvel can do no wrong" stage, and you've got the clout to convince people Ghost Rider will work because people will buy whatever you sell, you can cast some up-and-comer as Jones.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Or Spider-Man? Well, maybe not Gender Flip so much as shift focus to Spider-Gwen, Arana, Mayday, or Silk.

We're soon going to have 3 MCU film series starring Royals Who Actually Do Something (Thor, Black Panther, and Inhumans). Having at least one out of those three be a queen would keep things fresh in the film line-up. And if she's married to Medusa, it would provide for an interesting take on how the culture/norms of a hidden nation of metahumans (all the way up to the monarchy) developed over the course of history.

Yeah, I don't see much of a point in gender swapping Black Bolt in particular. Especially since if they wanted to make the Inhumans movie female-led, they'd just have to make Medusa the most important character to the overall narrative.
The nature of Black Bolt's powers alone make it pretty much a guarantee that barring the story being told from an outsider's perspective, Medusa will probably have the greatest volume of lines, even if Black Bolt will probably have the most important line.
Regarding Thor, gender swapping a lead character, regardless of how credible the actress is, would of been an enormous risk. Thor was already the most experimental Phase 1 film by a considerable margin, and the further they deviated from how the character was portrayed in the comics the less of the character's existing fanbase they can count on.
I'm not saying that a female led-Thor movie would of certainly failed, but even if they cast the most credible action-heroine actress on the planet it still probably would of been a bigger gamble then Marvel was probably comfortable with in Phase 1.
While I am generally of the view that they could of had a female-led film in Phase 1, but when the question becomes which movie should of been changed my only answer is Iron Man 2. Not out of any dislike of the film, but because there was already an Iron Man movie in Phase 1, and no other character has ever gotten 2 movies in a single phase.

If Mads Mikkelsen can star in a movie where he says nothing, and Tom Hardy can star in one where he speaks mostly in grunts and one-word sentences, then Black Bolt can be the main character of Inhumans.

@Higherbrainpattern- True. But that is interesting assuming that's the casting call for Danny.
What I do find interesting also is how young the character (?) is supposed to be. Like I know actors often play younger but as far as actor ages go, Mike Coulter is 39 and so this seemingly would call for a Danny that's significantly younger than Luke.
