Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]The difference wouldn't be as striking though, and then we also wouldn't get the interracial relationship between Danny and Misty Knight, something that I've heard is important to represent.

Despite being thoroughly anti-Reg when it comes to the comic book Civil War, I find the Sokovia Accords (based on what we've seen so far) pretty reasonable. The accords are basically saying that, given how much destruction the Avengers cause when they intervene, the nations of the world have the right to decide whether a given situation crosses the Godzilla Threshold or not. Also, given that the Avengers are almost all American, it gives other nations security that they won't be used as an arm of the US military: there's only going to be agreement on deploying the Avengers if there's a clear global threat.

This would be an even stronger argument if Hulk was still on the team, because deploying Hulk is certainly a matter of the Godzilla Threshold. With the current makeup of the team, it's really only Stark and Wanda who have the destructive power to warrant the Accords. Even so, it's easy to see a strong case for the agreement. The distiction between "privatizing world peace" in Stark's words, and "holding a gun to the head of everyone on Earth", in Cap's words, is difficult to see.

The argument against the Accords is that if Cap had refrained from investigating SHIEDRA because he hadn't been authorized to do so by the UN, HYDRA would killed millions of people. Handing power over to the authorities means that you can't act against them when they do wrong.

Another question (given the hunt for Bucky) is: do the Accords also say that the Avengers are required to intervene when the authorities do request their intervention? That could make the Accords more problematic.

[up][up]That's assuming Misty even does show up int the MNU.

The only thing that bugs me about the Sokovia Accords is that it being focused solely on the Avengers means that it doesn't really speak to a superhero/superhuman situation in general as much as keep the universe centered on those few characters.

[up][up] I thought that she was confirmed to show up in Luke Cage? I could be wrong, though.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

[up][up]Then again, at this point the only top-tier superhero who isn't an avenger is Ant-man.

[up][up] Yep. Simone Missick. I'm super excited for her.

[up]x5 There was a printed copy with the Phase 2 box set, but it was pretty barebones. I'm actually really excited to see what they have in mind for the Accords. Seems like it's doing well to remedy one of the biggest problems with the original story.

Rewatched Age of Ultron today.

It was fun. Lots of laughs were to be had.

Just having the accords written down is an improvement over the comic book version, if what I've heard of the latter is correct. Sounds like authors - depending on which side they were on - interpreted it as everything from "superheroes need to be trained and licensed, have documented identities, and be held responsible for their actions" to "everyone with superpowers is being conscripted and will be thrown into supernatural Gitmo if they don't comply".

Intentional laughs?

On that note, finally saw Ant Man. Really great and for the most part doesn't "feel" like it's part of an MCU (in a good way). It's small scale and grounded and somehow paradoxically it makes the completely unbelievable science seem believable.

[up][up][up][up]Well then, that brings me back to Fox Box Kid. I'm still not sure what ethnicity Rand should be for the series. I just want the actor in question to pull off the character well, not that I'm worried about that given Netflix's exceptional casting thus far.

Been a while since I've seen it. I think I mostly liked it at the time.

Also, RE Dany, I don't mind his being white (although I'm always big on more diverse casting) but as far as personality goes, I was thinking of Ghost Dog and Jin from Samurai Champloo (granted, these are people in Japanese rather than Chinese traditions)- but basically someone who is kind of stoic and philosophical, which can also make them (especially in Jin's case) The Comically Serious.

But importantly, a contrast with Daredevil in terms of being fairly "together".

You know what would be funny? If, after all this discussion, the series came out...and it was about Danielle Rand.

[up]Danny's personality in the comics is less stoic and more "cracking zingers during fighting." I think he and Spider-Man had a quip off one time maybe? In any case, boy howdy, is he not The Comically Serious. Which is one of the many things that differentiates him from Batman.

Ghost Dog from the eponomys film would really be a great model for the character, because Ghost Dog is highly urban and ghetto, and has a motif with having a very outdated philosophy guiding him and having this Tragic Hero Born in the Wrong Century aspect. In Ghost Dog we see the modern world of capitalism and cynism of crime through the lenses of this heavily spiritual Eastern philosophy.

And those are things I want for the Iron Fist series. You could make an argument that Daredevil is framed (very loosely) through the main character's Catholicism, Jessica Jones through her PTSD, then Iron Fist should be framed through Taoism. It'd be awesome.

I would appreciate more works that featured Taoism beyond a Hollywoodized version of it. Avatar dipped its toes in that, but kinda mucked things up with Korra's second season.

It's the Marvel Newspaper Universe. Right now it just consists of the Amazing Spider-Man comic strip.

Yeah, I'm guessing that those roles are for Danny Rand and Harold Meachum. And it is interesting in that, while the older role is specified as Caucasian, the younger role has no specific ethnicity.

Which jives with the report that Marvel was looking for an Asian-America actor, although they are also open to white actors.

I mean, let's not kid ourselves. The moment Marvel finds a good-looking white dude, they'll cast him as Danny Rand no matter what. :|

Wouldn't they add the physical requirements in the casting call for Iron Fist?
