Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The goal is to minimize the Mighty Whitey elements. Having him be some rich asshole who just went to China on a whim, mastered their culture in a year or two, and came back as the ultimate kung fu guy hits just about every possible point on the checklist.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Yeah, exactly, that's why I keep citing how it went in the comics.
Normally I don't mind what an adaptation changes, I love it when they change things but in this case the comic origin is, surprisingly, not that awful and surprisingly decent and respectable enough to make Danny less of a mighty whitey.

Again, stretching it because it makes Marvel look like they're going out of there way to make Danny Rand a white guy because the Kung Fu God landed next Danny, the rich white American tourist, ( out of the billions of people in Asia)even though he actually is white in the comics.
It's definitely not a good way to frame things.

Again, I'm pointing people to this: http://thenerdsofcolor.org/2014/03/11/marvel-please-cast-an-asian-american-iron-fist/
From now on, whenever any fictional story/adaptation needs to decide what race a character should be, the writers should draw up a chart with all the various possibilities assigned numbers based on real-world population percentages, factoring in the story's setting and characters' backgrounds, and then they should roll a however-many-sided die and decide the characters race based on that... after they've already written a script in which the characters' races don't matter (unless a character's race is directly relevant in some way or it wouldn't make sense for them to be a certain race given the setting/time period). And then they should do the same thing for gender/gender identity.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.I'd say instead of rolling on the chart they compare the current composition of the MCU to the chart and try for ballence, of sexual orientation should be on it, he'll I'd be up for social class as well.

“And the Bunny nails it!” ~ Gabrael “If the UN can get through a day without everyone strangling everyone else so can we.” ~ CyranIt occurs to me that a lot of Unfortunate Implications could be sidestepped by simply making K'un L'un an international city. Even if it's located in Asia, its population could be made up of people from all over the world and a wide variety of ethnic groups who came there seeking power, enlightenment, or sanctuary.
That...makes it even worse, because the Kunlun Mountains
are literally a place from Chinese mythology (and also a real place
).

Not sure if sincere or mocking proponents of social equality.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Well none of that sounded even remotely serious, so really, just a joke.
I mean, all y'all were basically just tossing around every possible race there for about half a page.

Visit my Tumblr! I may say things. The Bureau ProjectWell, the important thing is that he shouldn't be white. Because, you know, Mighty Whitey and all the associated baggage of the "white savior."
Also, I actually did do a pie chart yesterday of all the races of main and secondary characters (basically, anyone who had more than five or six lines in the movies) and it was, like, 81% white, 10% black, 6% Asian, and 3% Hispanic/Latino. So, uh, yeah.

You know, despite all this talk of how great it would be Iron Fist weren't white, (and seriously, it would be great if he weren't white,) I still think Marvel's just going to say 'Frick it' and make him white anyway. They've made a habit of having their characters look as close to the source material as possible, with the only exceptions being Nick Fury (who is still based off of his Ultimates counterpart,) and Bruce Banner. (Who was recast after Ed Norton, who did look like his comics counterpart, didn't return.) I don't think they're going to stop now just to have wider representation, regardless of the cultural baggage that having Iron Fist be white might bring. Because really, if Marvel truly cared about greater representation, we'd only have a few straight while male heroes in the MCU as opposed to 90% of them being straight white males.

It seems like it's stretching it.
The Kung Fu God came down to Asia and out of the billions of people that live in Asia it found a white American tourist to give its powers to.
