Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

... No. I won't repeat what I already said about the Mandarin over again. Khfan429 pretty much summed up my opinion on the topic anyway. That, and I still believe the Mandarin can be done without being a racist caricature. But whatever, moving on.
Anyway back on the topic of Spider-Man, I personally wonder if they will show his origin in Civil War or have it happen offscreen...

I hope the little twist on Spidey's costume is that they finally bring the web glidey-wing things under his arms to the big screen.
Also, on the whole child endangerment thing, would people be able to call on that? Spidey's has always been that one guy that doesn't do revealing their identity thing. He's pretty much one of the few Marvels that sustains any sort of double life these days.
Also, I loved the Mandarin twist and Iron Man 3 is still among my top favourite MCU movies.
The Blog The Art@Swan, Agreed, as it should. And who would even be able to tell under the mask? And it'll make the reveal more shocking to the other characters, like in Ultimate Spider-man when Black Cat found out she kissed some kid (kid relative to her).
The vomiting? Gross. But the moment? Priceless.
The Blog The ArtWhy are the web-gliding thing so popular exactly?

Eh, if you like being the comic book fan equivalent of cock-blocked, that's your thing. Not gonna judge. As far as I am concerned, Iron Man 3 was my first real disappointment in the MCU. Good thing it didn't go downhill from there.

I don't dislike the idea of the twist (it's actuallly neat), but I found the execution and Killian himself pretty underwhelming.
besides that, it was very easy to see coming, because killian gets way more focus and screentime than the "real" mandarin.
and I basically agree with khfan on why everything after The Reveal was underwhelming.

Since the subject of the Mandarin twist has come up, I thought I'd ask some people here on how they'd feel about an Asian or half-Asian Iron Fist. I'd like an IF because the MCU could use more non-white leads. At the same time I know it reeks of stereotypes as argued here http://www.comicbookresources.com/article/i-dont-want-an-asian-american-iron-fist
Thoughts?
I don't want an Asian Iron Fist because if we were going to do that, I'd rather they just adapt Shang-Chi. We have a perfectly good Asian character who would be going unused for the sake of Race Lifting a white character. I'm not usually opposed to Race Lifts but that just rubs me the wrong way. It feels like saying that minority actors are fine but only so long as they're still playing white people.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Wasn't he full-blood american in the comic anyway?
As for the Mandarin twist, really, it's easy to see. Try to imagine the movie without the twist, with Killian established as the main villain from start to finish and no Trevor Slattery thing. Would you still consider it a great movie?

So long as Shang-Chi's not being snubbed, I'd be cool with it.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Shang-Chi is the Master of Kung Fu, the greatest martial artist in the Marvel Universe. Both he and Iron Fist were introduced to capitalize on the kung fu craze of the 1970's.
Here he is training Spider-Man

Let me just say that anyone who disliked the Mandarin twist has no concept of subtlety and/or would rather have a walking racist cartoon as a villain And That's Terrible.
