Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I actually like how Ao S manages to hit a balance between using actual comic book characters while still grounding them. The Absorbing Men, Mr. Hyde, Lash, all characters which still hit the basic plot points of their comic book counterparts, but adjusted in a way which makes them just more interesting. I absolutely loved the way how Absorbing Man "enjoyed" different textures, for example (I really hope that this character turns up again).

Apparently Absorbing Man was the guy who Matt Murdock's dad beat in the match he was supposed to lose.

Also, @Death's Apprentice

Just as an observation, I never realized until now how it feels like there's so few Muslims are on these threads.

There's AHR about they hang in other threads and despite my name, I don't count. Agnostic, but a Muslim father, lived in a primarily Islamic country for 2.5 years of my youth, and went to Qur'anic school for a while, so I'm at least Muslim adjacent.

Well, characters like Lash, Mr Hyde or Absorbing Man were good. ESPECIALLY Absorbing Man, who is almost identical to his comic book counterpart. But Blizzard, for example, feels like wasted potential.

Marcen and Hopey, who also hang out in other threads, are Muslims also, AFAIK. But yeah, in general I assume I'm the only Muslim on the thread, so it's always surprising when I meet another. :/

When we're done, there won't be anything left.

Marcen is Marcen, he's an odd enough case as is.

Kind of surprised there aren't as many Muslims on these threads. I don't know that many in real life, but the ones I've met were pretty cool.

You know, I don't really want to see Spidey as an Avenger. I mean, he's just a kid, they should at least wait until he's 18 or something.

I for one, would love to see 15-year old Peter Parker join the Avengers as Spider-Man.

...and then promptly die in his first scene, because he's so inexperienced.

The rest of the movie continues as normal, and we finally get a rest from all the Peter Parkers.

Yeah, keep telling yourself that. If I wanted to see so-called "realistic" crap like that, I would go read Kick-Ass.

Also, your logic is bad: if they kill off that Peter Parker they will just introduce another one later so no, no rest from it. Best we have one FINALLY last long for a change.

Wouldn't it be funny if superhero blockbusters did anticlimactic twists like that? Like, if they built up Iron Man's big nemesis for several films but he turned out to be only a drunken actor-

...oh wait. Never mind.

Hmm, they say that comic fans are gonna love the Spider-Man costume, and now there's gonna be a little "twist" to it.

I probably did it once before, but I"m calling it now: armpit webbing.

[up][up] Jokes on you though, because I thought the Mandarin twist was a stroke of genius by Shane Black.

Yes, but then Miles Morales shows up to replace him.

Oh I thought we were talking about Robert Downey Jr.

But yeah, I also liked the Mandarin twist.

And I don't think RDJ is that much of a nemesis to Tony.

I still think that the first part of the twist... advertising Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin only to have it turn out he's a doofy fraud... is a stroke of brilliance. That part is hilarious.

The problem comes in the second half of the twist. I really don't want to sound entitled, but I feel like when you tell us we're getting Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, the actual villain needs to be strong enough to make up for the fact that we aren't really getting Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin.

And Killian just doesn't do that. I think he's one of the two cases of the MCU movies having genuinely bad villains. He's bland, he's boring, he's another businessman in a suit with an uninspired plan that's basically just Stane's scheme from the first movie but more complicated. And to me, that subtracts a lot from the movie. The back end of the payoff just isn't worth the performance and story we could have gotten if they'd just played it straight, picked a more compelling character to make the actual villain (personally I was hoping for Maya), or even put the same amount of effort they put into preserving and setting up the twist into making Killian worth watching.

And we're back to the Mandarin twist for the 240th time!

Now we only wait until someone implies anyone who disliked the Mandarin twist has no concept of subtlety and/or would rather have a walking racist cartoon as a villain And That's Terrible.

I can't wait.
