Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

He is in the comics, yes. His real identity appeared on the third episode of Agents of SHIELD, but he did not become Graviton in it.

As far as the two fighting, I have no idea if it ever happened in the comics.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Thanks to the example Stark set, Oscorp should be now investing more than ever in exoskeleton tech for their government clients.

What if this time Spidey isn't bitten by a spider and just pilots an experimental man-shaped spider suit?

He could always be an alien from the planet Spider, ride a motorcycle and have his own giant robot.

[up]At the very least, that should be how Spiderman is introduced in Civil War.

IRONMAN: Okay, look Cap. I know you don't want to fight me. Hell, I wouldn't want to fight me. So why don't all we go over to my place, have a few drinks, and—

[All of a sudden, the words ' HOKUTSIN GEEEEEENIEEEEE! HOKUTSIN GEEEEENIEEEEE! ' can be heard from above. All look up to see a gigantic robot flying in from on high, with Spiderman being visible in the cockpit. '

CAP: ...What was that about going over to your place?

IRONMAN: Yeah, I figured you'd say that.

It's good thing that Spidey will be on Cap's side, because Spidey would probably curb-stomp him.

Then again, that's just based on his stats on The Amazing Spider-Man series. Don't know how his stats will be on the Civil War. -shrugs-

I do believe in the comics Spidey actually observes Cap could beat him down very easily, mostly because Captain is a much more experienced and ruthless fighter than Spider-Man is, plus the shield gives him an edge.

Doesn't Cap's reliance on the shield actually work as a massive disadvantage against someone like Spidey? He could just catch it with his webs and throw it away. After that, what's stoping Spidey to just swing around him and web-spam him into submission?

Determiniation, experience, strategy, not actually 100% entirely reliant on his shield.

But that's his only method of attacking anyone in a distance.

Also, it's not like Spidey doesn't have those. Not experience, maybe, but he does have determination and strategy.

This Spidey, even if he is an already-established hero by the time he turns up, still has a lot less experience than Cap. I would say Cap would beat Spider-Man most of the time but not necessarily all of the time (Spidey's current tech kick might give him an edge for example) due to an edge in tactics.

Also, barely related but this kind of reminds me of Spidey's dialogue at the bottom here after he does manage to grab the shield in the Inverted V Mighty Avengers battle.

[up][up] Assuming the fight takes place at 21st century New York City, Spidey is actually likely to have more experience when it comes to fighting in that particular terrain.

I think secondary powers are undervalued tools here. Spidey doesn't just have an edge because he's got superior physical stats, if he properly utilizes the spider-sense he can tell when Cap's gearing up for an attack.

Not to mention that the shield is also easily removed (not to say that it's the be-all end-all of what Cap has, but it is a large portion of his offense and defense) when you combine adhesive fingers with greater physical strength.

The fight would be more evenly matched, or even significantly towards Cap's favor, if Spidey's webs can't stick to the Shield.

Then again, seeing how Bucky was able to grab onto it, I guess that's not the case.

[up]I'm all but certain Spidey could jump on the thing mid-flight and "surf" on it. He's just that quick and accurate (he has shot bullets out of the air perfectly with his webs, after all).

Cap has fought roughly a year, maybe more (from early 1943 to late 1944, maybe early 1945) or so in WWII, the bloodiest conflict in human history and against super-science Nazis, the Chitauri, several SHIELD agents (and a motherfucking quinjet), and a unspecified amound of enemies while working for SHIELD in-between The Avengers and The Winter Soldier, and a also unspecified amount of HYDRA goons in-between Avengers and Age of Ultron. He's as veteran as one can get, while Spidey is a youngster with not much experience.

He has experience aplenty on the open battlefield (WWII plus the Battle of New York), and urban warfare (his operations for SHIELD, with the Avengers, most of Winter Soldier).

Being bashed with a Vibranium-alloy shield by a man as strong as Cap could mess up Spidey something fierce.

And how exactly his experience going to prevent him from getting webbed to submission by someone who is stronger (or at least evenly matched), faster, knows in and outs of the battleground (again, assuming the fight takes place in present day NYC), keener reflex and senses, without any ranged attack (because Spidey's not an idiot and will take away his shield anyway)?

It's not like he spent many years fighting superhumans in the caliber of Spiderman during the War.

Spider-Man really shouldn't lose a fight to Captain America, but events tend to give certain characters Popularity Power.

Apparently Cap defeated Spidey in Civil War comics.

So...how did that happen?
