Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up]It is more the lack of good in the overall track record than "oh, this guy wrote a bad movie once or twice".

Hey, Joel Schumacher directed Batman and Robin, and yet his movie Falling Down is pretty good. Brett Ratner made the Rush Hour movies but banged out Red Dragon, and a lot of people liked that.

Let's just wait and see. Even if the script is bad, the acting can more than make up for it.

Every non-sequel MCU movie gets this.

"James Gunn did the Scooby-Doo movies and wrote a list ranking the sexiness of comic characters and he's directing a movie about characters obscure to even Marvel readers. Guardians is gonna suck."

"Ant-Man will be the first movie in the MCU that bombs because it's about a character with a silly name and powers. And Edgar Wright isn't directing now, so it's definitely gonna be awful."

I dunno, maybe people will be right this time and Doctor Strange will fail spectacularly, but due to how they've done so well so far (sure, they're had some missteps, but I don't think there are any MCU movies that are completely "bad", and my love for the character of Strange, I'm gonna have faith that it'll turn out good.

Oh god, those complainers are starting to sound like Cracked whenever they make an article saying the MCU is gonna fail soon.

I haven't seen an article like that recently, thank goodness.

I did see one about how China will ruin all cinema forever though.

Cracked may lurk this thread.

I'm sorta worried about Doctor Strange since the choices are a bit baffling, but if they can pull it off good for them. Feige being personally invested is good news at least, means he's more likely to keep them in line.

Hmm, I like the plan they seem to have for Black Widow in Civil War for the most part. But I really hope they don't bring the stupid Brucetasha subplot back.

She says Natasha realizes and accepts why Bruce felt he had to leave the Avengers so hopefully that means minimal angst.

News on Zemo and Martin Freeman's character. He says Zemo is a product of everything that has happened in the MCU up to this point (let the speculation commence) and that Freeman's character has a small role in this one that will be expanded on in future films. So I think those who said he's playing Everett Ross may be correct.

Felt like highlighting this part from the interview, when asked about Age of Ultron and Banner.

Johansson: "You know, I’m happy that people scrutinize the Widow’s storylines and care about it and are invested. I’d much rather it be like that than have a kind of “meh” reaction. For me to have people say that would be, ouch, you know? Everything that I’ve done with the Widow, to me makes sense. It’s in line with active decisions that I’ve made for the character."

There's more she says but that's the jist of it.

Also they confirm the Story-Breaker Power problem was part of the reason Thor and Hulk were excluded.

"You put those guys in a fight, it’s over quickly. It’s like, ‘Well, we have the Hulk on our side.’ Oh, fine, then," Christopher Markus explains. "You’ve got to kind of choose your roster depending on what kind of fight you want to have."

Zemo could finally be a guy who effectively takes advantage of the changing world and advent of superheroes/villains as part of his plans, which we haven't really gotten yet.

Strucker tried, but he went out like a punk before he could do anything with it. It's something I've been hoping they would do with the Maggia at some point too, but we're getting them in Agent Carter apparently so they'll probably be more involved more in how it begins than in the current situation.

[up]Can't really blame them. And I like that they chose to include Hulk in Thor Ragnarok to make up for it, though I kinda wish they had made a Hulk 2 or something. If just to have the Leader actually show up in a movie. His comic spin-off appearance was disappointing.

[up][up][up][up][up]Not super shocked at that fact.

Plus, what would you do to balance it? Putting Hulk on Tony's side and Thor on Steve's for example just means both are only there to counter the other.

And the balance of power is already tilted ludicrously in Tony's favor anyway.
