Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Sony hasn't exactly tapped out, they decided to join the strongest gang on the playground - smart move. I wouldn't count Fox out though

Civil War vs Dawn of Justice vs X-men

X-men will loose this one for sure. And I go against the trend and say that Civil war will make more than Dawn of Justice, simply because it has a longer built-up. I would be very surprised if it makes less than Winter Soldier made, and not that Surprised if it comes close to Iron Man 3 numbers. With Dawn of Justice I would be very surprised if it even makes The Dark Knight numbers...there simply isn't enough built-up, and Man of Steel is a very controversial movie.

Deadpool vs Dr. Strange vs Suicide Squat

That is actually the more interesting battle of the year. Deadpool might be R-rated, but the marketing campaign they have is knocking it out of the park, plus, it will be the first one out of the gate. Dr. Strange has mostly it's incredible cast as well as the fact that it belongs to the MCU going for it. With Suicide Squat a lot hinges on Dawn of Justice.

I think Deadpool is very likely to be the best of the solo movies (and I'm definitely planning to see it), but that doesn't necessarily mean highest-grossing. It's an R-rated dark action comedy, which is a fairly niche category. I'd guess it's absolute top range would be around the level of Kingsman this year (another R-rated dark satirical action comedy), with around $130 mil.

Wait, there are people who honestly believe that Dawn of Justice will do better than Civil War?

Wow. Isn't Age of Ultron the only post The Avengers movie that made less than its predecessor (and even then it was 1.5 billion and 1.4billion)?

Man Of Steel: $290 mil domestic, $688 mil global

Captain America The Winter Soldier: $260 mil domestic, $714 mil global

Based on that, it's not completely unreasonable to think BVS will do better domestically. But given the very mixed response to Man Of Steel and the overwhelmingly positive response to Winter Solider, and the popularity of the rest of the Avengers, I expect Civil War to better.

It basically depends on how much box office pull you think Batman (sans Nolan) has. If BVS can pull Dark Knight Rises kind of numbers, then it will win.

The last two times Batman starred in a movie, each one grossed over a billion dollars. Even if it's a different guy in the Batman suit, you can't take that out of the equation.

Considering that 700 million is a jump from 350 of the previous one, and other Phase 2 movies too experienced pretty sharp increase, I still wouldn't bet on that.

Also, I'm pretty sure the other media that ties into Civil War do better job in building up the hype than BVS do.

Or maybe I'm completely wrong and be surprised at the actual outcome in 2016.

[up][up][up]Sure, but there is also Iron Man in the movie, and his last movie nearly made Avengers numbers. Then there is the fact that The Winter Soldier is considered by many the best Marvel movie while Man of Steel is very controversial and at least partly made as much because many considered it some sort of spiritual successor of the Dark Knight trilogy.

By the time BVS comes along, people will realize that this DC Cinematic Universe has not a whole lot to do with The Dark knight saga, so I wouldn't count on the association with that series.

New interview with the Russo bros. about the trailer that just dropped. Very interesting stuff.

Some of the more interesting stuff I found within that interview:

“When people leave the theatre, they’re going to be arguing about who was right in the movie, whether it was Tony, or whether it was Cap,” says Joe Russo. “Tony has a very legitimate argument in the movie that’s a very adult point of view, about culpability, about the Avengers’ responsibility to the world, and the world’s right to have some sort of control over the Avengers. It’s a very complicated emotional arc for Tony Stark in this movie. Downey is utterly amazing in the part. I think he’s taking this character he’s been crafting for years and goes to some very risky places in the movie with the character.”

“Sometimes I want to punch you in your perfect teeth,” Tony – now suited and booted – tells a nonplussed Steve. And you can see why, according to the Russos. “Tony is a person who understands the grey as well as anybody,” says Joe Russo. “Cap is extremely black and white and there is a certain level of moral fibre and fortitude that a guy like Tony would perceive as being irritatingly perfect, and irritatingly obstinate. The notion of wanting to punch Cap in his perfect teeth is a way to express his frustration with Cap’s inability to conform to politics, and to compromise.”

Russo weighs in. “We also played with the history. By the time Tony Stark was born and grew up, Captain America was a legend. We’re tracing the history between these two characters. It’s very interesting. It’s a sick, complicated relationship.”

Does this hint at rumours that the contretemps between Tony and Steve might in some way be linked to Tony’s father, Howard? In the MCU, Howard Stark died (when he was in Gerard Sanders mode, not John Slattery or Dominic Cooper) in a car crash before the events of Iron Man. But what if Bucky, as the Winter Soldier, was responsible for his death? Would that give Tony grounds for wanting to smash Cap’s face into a bloody pulp?

Enter the “wild card” – Chadwick Boseman as the newest superhero on the Marvel block, T’Challa, leader of the African country of Wakanda. We’ll come to know him best as the incredibly athletic, super-smart Black Panther. And that is one heck of a suit.

“It’s a combination of a practical costume and VFX. It’s a vibranium weave, a mesh, almost like a chainmail. Luminescence is something we have to do in post,” says Joe Russo. That the Black Panther’s suit is made out of vibranium should not come as a surprise – Age Of Ultron established that Wakanda is the MCU’s source of vibranium, the near-unbreakable metal out of which Cap’s shield is forged. Taking on a guy clad in that entire metal is going to be tricky.

And what of the Panther’s role in the movie? “He’s there for a very different reason which brings him into conflict with Cap and his team,” adds Joe. “His motivations are not their motivations.”

At the airport, Natasha surveys the mayhem. Is she undecided about choosing a side? “It’s a great position to put Natasha in in this movie,” says Anthony Russo. “In a way, her head is with Tony’s side of things, but her heart is with Cap in a lot of ways. It’s a really awesome spot for her as a character in the film.”

And now the crucial line of the trailer: Tony Stark, the first hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the man who bankrolled the Avengers, looking as upset as we’ve ever seen him, replies: “so was I”. And, from this line on, it seems that there may be no way back for the two superfriends. “The theme of the movie is betrayal and it’s a very powerful theme,” reveals Joe Russo. “The movie’s extremely emotional. It hinges on that emotion, and on a very personal level we didn’t want the movie to become about politics and people arguing about platitudes. The third act is built around a very personal moment between these characters.”

Interesting shit.

Looks like they'll do a better job of making both sides equal this time around.

So Bucky is framed for a bombing, which makes turning himself in far less of an option then it would have been before, because there's no order to take him in alive.

I'm wondering how this will play out.

I wonder what they mean by luminescence on the Panther suit.

That is interesting they once again are taking the time to say they are heavily "modernizing" Zemo. I think the people that called that he is going to be a politician manipulating the Accords are onto something.

I also like the idea of tracing Tony's history with Captain America as a legend. I did always think the "That's the guy my dad never shut up about?!" line was indicative of deeper issues.

I wonder what they mean by luminescence on the Panther suit.

Well, vibranium is sorta shiny.

This all has got me very fascinated about the film, and confident that they can handle these arcs. One of the things I like a lot about The Winter Soldier is that they starred multiple characters with distinct but related arcs. Every time I watch it, I feel like I can focus on a different character and see something new.

[up][up]I think one thing the trailer did very well was clear any lingering doubts that this was not a proper Captain America but "Avengers 2.5".

There is something inherently funny about a guy called "Black Panther" in a "Civil War". I have no idea why.
