Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I suspect he's being set up for Jessica Jones season two.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. It's slightly weird that they are going to adapt the Defenders in this way, anyway, since the Defenders were never really "street level" heroes. They were always the weird heroes, the ones who fought against Lovecraftian horrors and encountered beings like the Elf With a Gun (whom I still hope will show up in the MCU, because that would be hilarious).
There's also been a number of different incarnations of the Defenders, from the original (which had the Hulk, Namor, Dr. Strange, and Silver Surfer) to the '70s version with Hellcat and Nighthawk, to the Secret Defenders (the only team with Iron Fist in it), to last years Fearless Defenders (which were led by Misty Knight and Valkyrie and were made up of female superheroes).
Meh. I don't have a problem with it. "Defenders" just sounds neat and sorts well thematically with "Avengers". All it really means that if we ever get enough capital-w Weird characters to necessitate their own team it'll just be called something else. "Defenders" is kinda bland for such a concept anyway.
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies. There's nothing to have a problem with. It's either "The Defenders" or "Marvel Knights" and one sounds less out there than the other. It's the same reason we'll never hear anyone in the Netflix shows call the "The Incident" an Alien Invasion.
Saw the first episode with my mom.
HOLY SHIT THAT ENDING. JUST HOLY SHIT.
I can't do it.
Nope.
Noooope.
Spoil it for me. Someone tell me what happens in the end. This episode was so HEAVY. I don't think I can go any further without knowing if it turns out remotely well for our heroes.

An issue I have with the Defenders is that noe if they ever want to do the "Dr. Strange has a team of heroes that face supernatural threats" idea (which they really should, because it'd be a great way to continue huge epic team plots without it always being the Avengers), now they have to find a new name for them.
And if that team takes the name of a third team, then that team would have to find a new name should they ever get adapted, etc and so on. Until one day the Illuminati are set up and they have to call themselves Heroes For Hire.
Though I kind of doubt the characters will all themselves the Defenders in-universe, kind of like how nobody in the Young Justice animated show ever called the team by that name. None of the Netflix heroes met so far are the kind to really be into that sort of thing.

Ok ok ok.
- Krysten Ritter is awesome as Jessica Jones. Natural choice. Plays up the badass, funny, and tragic sides of Jessica like a boss.
- Mike Colter is also awesome as Luke Cage, giving off the badass awesomeness personality that I expect from the character. Even though he probably doesn't have his super power yet.
- And I will never stop considering David Tennant as a great actor. But...
The first episode is too...whoa. And the episode after, I jumped ship after the "It's not my fault. It's yours." line.
I'm sorry, you guys.
EDIT: My mom's hooked on the show. And through that, I found out that actually Luke already has his superpower. Huh.

WRT Defenders, Marvel likes recycling unused trademarks. They haven't been able to launch a successful Defenders comic book since the original one was cancelled back in the 80's, and it's unlikely they were gonna try it in the movies anytime soon since Namor and the Silver Surfer are both off-limits.
For a similar example, I think someone said the Young Justice cartoon at DC was called that because someone at WB pointed out that they already owned the trademark on the name, even though the cartoon had almost nothing at all to do with the comic book of the same name.

I think that's ironically the one moment that f**ked with me the most out of the entire run, it being a combination of Yank the Dog's Chain, Downer Ending, and complete and utter Nightmare Fuel. Everything seemed to get emotionally easier for me after that point. Its funny how Purple Man is scarier (and eldritch in some ways) the less he appears in person.

I will say, when Jessica was traversing through the hallway, into the dark room, and into the bedroom in the first episode, I literally said to myself "Someone was looking forward to Silent Hills."
EDIT: I feel like I should reiterate, the actors are great, no doubt there. It's just the story that's not working for me. People get that feeling sometimes, right?

Just finished the last episode now.
Overall it was a very good show, but I still prefer Daredevil. This one's writing felt a little bit sloppier, the humor was not as good (Though Jessica and Claire's banter was really top-notch), and of course the action scenes weren't as impressive, but I'd still give it a B+ to Daredevil's A.
But anyway, onto the positive. I liked how in his powered-up state Kilgrave starts to get purple veins and even his skin gets tinted purple when he's yelling, but I kinda wish they showed that more. It's barely noticeable. The nods to Daredevil as well as the future Defenders title were neat, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with Simpson and the company that caused Jessica to get her powers come season 2 or Defenders.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

(Here's
the issue I'm talking about, in case anyone wants to see it.)
