Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It's not really an effect that can get stronger. I mean, at the point where people obey your every word, that's kind of it. They can't obey your every word harder.

There's a character who has mind control abilities in the Hero Academia mango.

Bit more limited than Purple Man. He can only control people if you respond to something he says. And he has to be consciously trying to control you.

He's a creepy lookin dude but all he wants is to be a hero. But his whole life people have basically assumed that its an awesome power because you could get away with all kinds of things.

So I thought that was interesting use of bad powers good people.

The main character of Preacher has a similar ability to purple man. He can control it and its shown as the voice of god. The power can cause impossible things to happen theoretically. Such as commanding a one armed man to regrow his missing limb.

Having compelling voice that is always on is almost unfathomable. You'd have to communicate in written word just to stay sane at that point.

For Purple Man, communicating with the written word would be the same as speaking.

Well, Purple Man can not do anything like that. He can command people to do what they already can do. Unless they can already regrow limbs, he can't command them to do it.

Maybe these sorts of mind control powers are how the Hungry Pumkin can get away with barging into a restaurant and demanding free food...

Hela also is a example of Villainesses Want Heroes.

Do you still follow Purple Man's orders when you're not in his presence? If it's controlled by pheromones you should snap out of it after he gets too far away.

It's presumably like hypnotic suggestion. It's still there until you complete what you've been told, or something specifically snaps you out of it.

[up][up] The seems like his control might extend further than that. I think there were scenes in the trailer with him giving orders over the phone.

Well the TV show could just make his powers a Compelling Voice. In the comics it should only work when in range of his pheromones.

Why was it cringe-worthy? I was much better than the original Agent Carter promos that said, "Sometimes the best man for a job...IS A WOMAN!"

I mean, the trailer is silly, but no more silly than most trailers like that tend to be.
