Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Peter might not even be a photographer. Newspaper photographer is such an anachronism at this point that they might try to find him a more current job.

Him being an intern or web designer for the Bugle like in Ultimate Spider-Man is a good solution. With the latter he still gets to come and go as he pleases while still retaining his supporting cast from the paper.

It's my understanding that 616 (or 8 now I guess) Peter hasn't been a photographer in a damn long time. They may choose not to even include the Bugle to begin with.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

I want to say that it's possible Hank could do an uncredited cameo at Peggy's funeral

Good call.

Maybe they'll also have a poorly disguised Nick Fury.

Does Agent Cater's exploration of the Dark Force relate to the speculation of dark magic zealots opening a gateway into the Dark Dimension during the 60s? Within this dimension typically lies Dormammu and his sister Umar. The Dark Dimension is structured as a dumping ground for other realties, but at the most fundamental level it's just a pocket universe. There is also an empire here long before Dormammu's arrival which tried to shatter dismissal barriers so it could expand. The denizens are freaks of nature and other worldly horrors. They receive extra power by subjection, therefore whoever rules at the top is the strongest. For example he, she, or it can control all matter and substances within this dimension. Lastly the Forbdian Dimensions exist here and if one is not careful then they can end up on The Road of Repetition.

I wonder if one of the actress plays Morgan let Fay

I think it's safe to say Agent Carter will not be dealing with Dormammu or sorcerers.

Buried topic:

Also, out of curiosity, which Daredevil vs. Kingpin climax fight did you guys think was more satisfying, the 2015 one or the 2003 one?

I haven't seen the 2003 movie, so 2015.

2015. Don't get me wrong, I like the 2003 film and Michael Clarke Duncan was amazing as Kingpin, but the fight left a bit to be desired. Seriously, DD goes from being utterly owned to winning with a knee kick?

The 2015 fight was more of a knock down, drag out brawl, which is fitting for the finale of a superhero show/movie.

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?

All Hail Queen Peggy!!! (Hopefully the ratings for the next season will show that a lot of people have caught up on the show in the meantime).

Why is being a photographer an anachronism? Last time I checked there were still photographs attached to articles. But I don't think that we have to worry about that before the next movie.

Because print journalism is a dying breed. "Anachronism" isn't the correct word, but it's a hilariously archaic job for a teenager to want to do in 2015.

Unless the Daily Bugle is now a Buzzfeed-style website, it amounts to the same thing. Working at a newspaper would be...what's the word...quaint.

'Photographer' isn't really an out-of-date job. The means of doing so would be different, but there's still value in a good photo.

And considering how we pore over every blurry leaked picture from the set of a film, Peter could still get some good mileage out of a slightly out-of-focus photo from a well-placed smartphone.

I do agree that working at a newspaper may not have the cachet it has these days. But many newspapers have digital divisions.

[up][up][up][up][up]Student in (print) journalism here, it's not that anarchonistic, just don't expect a full time job out of it. There's plenty of freelance work available.

Peter could still be a photographer that typically works for the Bugle without being a full time employee.

Maybe in the movies (although even then I'm not so sure), and maybe eventually in the comics, but in the classic Spider-Man stories, he's a freelancer. Otherwise he wouldn't be selling JJJ his pics, he'd just get a salary for working at the Bugle.

I'm pretty sure the first Spider-Man movie has a scene were J. Jonah Jameson extolls to Peter the virtues of freelancing, in what's clearly an effort to not have to pay him as much.

The comics (the "Electro is Spider-Man" issue) also have a part where Jameson tries to fire him but Peter points out he's a freelancer.
