Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

If it's supposed to be the same trailer that was released at D23, then it's not anything particularly worth leaking ahead of schedule.

I have stopped to care about the Civil War trailer. My excitement has died months ago because there was nothing to keep it going. At least Agent of Shield is busy building up the conflict.

Not really interested in the trailer either. In fact I plan to avoid it.

It's supposed to drop with The Force Awakens, so it's barley more than a month away. Seems a little silly for anyone to encourage anything to leak online.

I heard the footage was kinda grainy.

I do wonder if Civil War will acknowledge the increase in superhumans that AOS is dealing with. Perhaps a nod to the ATCU?

[up][up]They kind of already did in Ant-man.

[up] Did they? They had a nod to Spider-Man, but not any sort of increase in superhumans or anything related to the ATCU (especially since AOS Season 3 hadn't started yet).

[up][up][up]Civil War is already finished. Unless Russo Brothers were given the details of AOS season 3 and a green light to use them way in advance then the chance is low.

The producers and writers of season 3 AOS were given screen plays of upcoming movies so they have a general sense of where to go. They actually begun writing on July 2015 while Markus and Mc Feely already finished Civil War's script by the time it was ready to film on April 2015.

Meanwhile Jeffry Bell said he isn't sure of how Agents of SHIELD will tie into Civil War if that possibility arises. It's to be determined.

[up] They didn't need to know details of Season 3 - the end of Season 2 already sets up the increase in superhumans via the fish oil pills.

But you're talking about exact plot details that are occurring right now - the ATCU capturing Inhumans.

Russo Brothers were not working alongside AOS's showrunners to know that in advance before Civil War's script finished. Unless at the last few months their writers quickly tweaked it, hearing what the Whedons would do.

[up][up][up][up] Not specifically, but the Spider-man was lead in "we have nowadays everything".

[up][up]I said "perhaps" a nod to the ATCU. I didn't say that they had to reference it directly. It's easy enough for a character to just comment about all these new superhumans popping up and how the government is trying to catch them all.

And even though the AOS writers didn't start writing until July doesn't mean they didn't have an outline of what they were going to do. Kevin Feige could have easily told the Russo brothers about the upcoming plans for AOS and they could have incorporated a nod to them.

Movies have reshoots that happen closer to the release date all the time. If they wanted (not saying they do) it'd be extremely easy to add in a new scene where someone references the Inhumans or the ATCU. Someone looks at a picture of Spider-Man and says "Does the ATCU know about this guy?" Boom. Done.

Now I'm not saying they will, but just that it's not the rocket science that some seem to think it is.

While I do think we may see better collaboration between the shows and films now that there's been a change in the leadership at Marvel Studios, I don't think we can expect to see it quite yet. Give it some time.

I just think it would be interesting, given how the President from Iron Man 3 made an appearance in Agents of SHIELD.

[up] Has it been officially stated anywhere that Gideon Malick and the Avengers WSC member played by the same actor is indeed the same character? It's widely assumed as such and the MCU wiki certainly thinks so, but I'm having trouble pinning down a source.

Technically it wouldn't be the first time the same actor has played multiple roles in the MCU. Unless Sousa somehow ends up in modern times after becoming immortal, being placed in stasis, or falling through a time portal somewhere in the run of Agent Carter...

@Wackd: I wonder...do you think The Worlds End would be improved if, say, Steven was a woman? Change nothing else, but change that. What do you think?
