Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

What, that one image where he's standing in a purple-lit room and everything is tinted dark purple? Because I'm not sure he's actually purple in that shot.

Also didn't one of you point out an instance where an actor got sick because of the body paints she had to wear? It's probably more trouble than it's worth to make the purple skin a constant thing.

I remember that being brought up yeah, so I'm glad they found a way to invoke Purple Man's comic appearance without body paint.

[up]I mean, acting-wise, you probably don't have to worry, and appearance wise this look probably won't be on screen for a super long time.

And I'm always impressed when Tom Holland does all those crazy moves. This may be one of those times where the physical prowess of the actor perfectly translates to his character. I could really see him doing many of his stunts.

Well, when he got the part he put up a couple of videos of him doing this stuff in his backyard, so he's pretty impressive to start with.

Ant-Man was surprisingly enjoyable in a Iron Man 1 way. Likable main characters and forgettable villain. I am pretty sure that had Marvel started with Scott he could very well be their leading man right now instead of Stark. Or better, Hope and him could be because that's something AM has over IM: his main female role does not suck.

If Edgar Wright had made the movie, she most likely would have sucked.

She was not in much of Wright's version, no. Neither was Michael Peña. Probably Bobby Canavale and Judy Greer, too. Most of the actors were consulted about their characters while Adam McKay was doing the rewrite, so the supporting cast all got larger roles than they did in the original version.

Also, Janet wouldn't have been in the movie at all.

Still sad that Wright got the boot? Because it sounds like we got a much better movie for it.

It would have been a very different movie to be sure. Edgar Wright makes more male-character-led films, and I don't want to presume that that's 100% the 'wrong' approach or that he's a bad person for doing so.

I am very happy the movie turned out well regardless and I have hopes for the sequel.

[up]I just don't think that he ever was a good fit for Ant-man, because what the fans are loving about the comic book series is Ant-man AND the Wasp (some even love the Wasp more than Ant-man), and he obviously was mostly interested in Ant-man from the get go.

Edgar is known for discarding female characters to either the background or make them hardly appearent in his films as prominent roles. Overall he isn't the best for establishing and fleshing out a female individual, which is people like Simon Peggy says it's his Achilles Heel.

Edgar Wright makes beautiful, well-written, intelligent films that have next to no net positive cultural impact. Which, y'know, his prerogative, but I'm hard pressed to think how Hot Fuzz and The World's End would've been terribly different if a decent number of characters got gender-swapped. (Shaun of the Dead does...decently? Liz is basically just the nagging-girlfriend trope but Di and Shaun's mum are both pretty solid characters.)

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

[up] The content I receive from his females tell me otherwise. He doesn't really write this gender in all their glory and baggage like their male counterparts. Often theyre just walkinklg cliches without a purpose of their own. The guy writes what he knows and that's men... not everyone is a balanced story teller

But the superhero genre is male driven anyway with a lot of beef jerky being tossed around, so he could have been fine. Someone would just blame the genere for the unreleased Ant Man's lack of females given importance. People already do that anyway when a superhero movie releases and 90# of the main, sub cast, and stand ins are male, while the remaining percent are females designated to meh roles.

Hot Fuzz was an awesome, awesome film and one of my favorites. But I can count the number of named female characters on one hand. And pretty much none of them have any plot importance.

What? Is Edgar Wright a Ferengi now? Who of "his females" are you receiving "content" from?

Yes, I would absolutely agree with what I'm vaguely sure you're trying to say.

I think the best female character he has done has to be Daisy from Spaced and that was pretty much because Jessica Stevenson co-wrote each episode with Simon Pegg.

Jessica Stevenson's disappearance from the Cornetto Trilogy after her being reduced to an in-joke in Shaun of the Dead saddens me deeply.
