Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

"Now, I'm not saying that if you join the Air Force, you will get superpowers. In fact, you probably won't. On the other hand, BOOM! -flexes muscles- What do you think of that?"

[up][up]Alone, the image of Carol with a cocky grin as she flexes like a New Jersey douchebag on television would be worth the ticket price. [lol]

Even if the new recruits don't get superpowers, maybe Tony Stark will build them some suits!

Yeah, but apparently Tony's going to be pro-registration in the upcoming Civil War movie, so he might need some muscle. Honestly, I figured that if anyone went out and started a private army, it would be Tony, but I guess he's working for the government now.

I think Civil War would work so much better if the Inhumans were out and about in the MCU.

They are. The movies just haven't established this. They can easily do that in Civil War though. Just bring up that the number of people getting powers has gone up over the past ~five years.

Short Version: They recently did a story in the Cap book that involved an anti-immigrant domestic terrorist group. Certain people in the conservative sphere objected to this saying it made them look bad.

In other news, Fox News is still dumb and impulsive and people are still surprised by this.

A group that has existed in the comics for decades, mind you. Fox News is a bunch of whiny oversensitive crybabies for an audience of similar caliber.

Fox news getting uppity bigots are portrayed as villains.

In other news, the sky is up, water is wet, and Thor's abs continue to be fantastic.

Co-host Tucker Carlson also sympathized with the Serpents’ leader, calling him just “an American who has misgivings upon unlimited illegal immigration and the costs associated with it.” Fellow co-host Heather Childers called for writers to “keep politics out of comic books”—except for storylines about “the people who are working the border to keep us safe.”

"Don't bring politics into comics, unless it's politics that we agree with!"

Of course, I might be guilty of a similar mindset, just from the opposite side of the spectrum. Hmm...

I feel like if your politics involve bias against other people based on their level of melanin or what's between their legs or who, if anyone, they put between their legs, those are politics worth keeping out of popular culture, yeah.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

The funny thing is they act as though Captain America was ever not political. That's what annoys me about these pieces. You can tell they've never read the books (or seen the movies) because they seem to think Captain America is an uber-American jock who runs around punching people while screaming "America, fuck yeah!"
