Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I think so many people are expecting Hope to go evil because Jan is the iconic Wasp and Hope is a villain in the comics. But I don't think they'll go that route. The MCU has shown they're more than willing to switch things up.

[up][up] The original post was "women with powers," not "heroines with powers," I believe.

[up] If anyone in the Ant-family is going to go crazy and/or evil, it's probably going to be Hank.

Hope going evil would be pretty severe Character Derailment in my opinion. It would make more sense for Jan to be evil and I doubt they'll do that.

Women with powers in the MCU:

  • Iron Man 3: Ellen Brandt (evil, died)
  • Iron Man 3: Pepper Potts (good, removed Extremis from her system)
  • Agents of SHIELD: Various Centipede solders (mind-controlled, killed or deactivated)
  • Agents of SHIELD: Raina (clairvoyance, ultimately became good, died)
  • Agents of SHIELD: Daisy Johnson (vibrations, good)
  • Agents of SHIELD: Jiaying (life sucking, evil, killed)
  • Agents of SHIELD: Alisha (duplication, kinda good, still alive)
  • Thor movies: Sif (Asgardian, good, alive)
  • Age of Ultron: Wanda Maximoff (telekinesis/telepathy, ultimately good, alive)
  • Ant-Man: Hope Pym (size changing suit, good, alive)

I'm...not really seeing that much of a big deal here.

If you're counting Sif you should probably count Lorelei.

[down] Hope's mother, the original Wasp. She's the one we see making the Heroic Sacrifice to stop the missile in Ant-Man.

Going back a few pages (and giving us something different to talk about, for a change).

Re: Quilll

though he arguably doesn't identify as [an earthling] any more

This is the same Peter Quill that obsessively listens to his Sony Walkman, has a troll doll on his dashboard, tried to hit on Gamora by telling her about Footloose, and named his ship after the girl from Who's the Boss?, yeah? At what point in there did he stop identifying as an earthling? His entire personality is that he clings to every remnant he has of Earth, because as far as he's concerned there's no means by which he can ever go home.

They might be referring to the fact that he calls himself a Terran. That's nothing special though. The cosmic community in the Marvel Universe calls humans that all the time.

Yeah, a lot of the male heroes have problems, too, but the only one who is mentally somewhat instable is Tony and maybe Daredevil. The others deal just fine with their live as Superheroes. But on the female side we already have Wanda and Jessica Jones despite a very, very small selection. That's why I want Carol to be a badass character who is able to cope just fine with her abilities.

[up][up][up] The identity he clings to comes from his mother, not from Earth as a whole. He's not connected with Earth beyond being from there, he shows no desire to connect with Earth or his family at all in the future or even seems to give a damn about it at all.

He's basically forgone Earth for the greater universe - despite the resentment there he even identifies more with the Ravagers than he does with being an Earthling.

[up] Banner's got some serious issues as well. He only continues being a superhero with great reservation and resentment, because it's the only way to do some good with the Hulk, but everything connected to it weighs on him and his sense of self-worth heavily - sometimes he's about as self destructive as a person who is aware he can't actually destroy himself can be.

Age of Ultron developed a sort of "soldier who can't imagine himself without war" complex for Cap, which is probably going to play into his appearance in Civil War.

All the talk about both Jess and Carol having drinking problems made me think of this quote from when cracked reviewed the old Avengers show from the 90s.

One of the things that Marvel did more than DC was give its characters relatable human problems. For example, Spider-Man is a nerd with money problems, Iron Man is an alcoholic, Ms. Marvel is an alcoholic, Flash Thompson is an alcoholic, Banshee is an alcoholic, and Sandman is an alcoholic. For the cartoon, they obviously couldn't give everyone alcoholism.

[up]So, who was the winner and got the alcoholism?

[up][up]My point was that whatever issues they have, they are all shown as being able to cope without become drug addicts or crazy.

I keep thinking how cool the MCU A-force team would be.

Extremis!Pepper leading the team. Lady Sif as the lancer. Garmora as the big guy. Hope as the Heart. I'm way behind on Agents of Sheild but Quake seems cool too.

I think Natasha and Wanda can stay on the avengers.

[up][up] There's a nice scene in the first Captain America where he desperately wants to drown his sorrows but literally can't because his powers don't let him. It's one of the better small scenes of the movie, even taking into account that Cap is literally the only hero in the verse that doesn't have character development to that extent.

Strong characters have to be weak at times to be strong - they're made to show cracks and to be broken, and then reforged into something stronger.

[up]Someone who ones tries to drown his sorrow is hardly and alcoholic. Steve is remarkable sane.

And I am not against the female characters making mistakes, but I do so a problem if superpowers starts to equal mental instability.

She can have a dozen of other flaws which don't have this kind of implications.

Can we not gloss over the fact that Banner's issues with the Hulk are so dire that he has attempted suicide? Like, he actually put a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger. In terms of mental problems associated with powers, he's the...well, the giant green rage monster in the room.

Also, in this discussion, Asgardians probably shouldn't be considered either for or against the point. Aside from the added benefits Thor gets from Mjolnir, Asgardians as a species only have powers when compared to humans. Within their own community, that's just how people are.

Wanda is not mentally unstable, though. Not yet. They might pursuit that plot-line in the future, but it is uncertain.

Anyway, if they opt to go for the "recovering alcoholic" route for Marvel, then this would happen before she gets her powers.

Yeah, Carol being a recovering alcoholic has nothing to do with her getting powers.

she drank because Marcus abducted her just to have a baby. she coped from rape via alcohol. it was forced pregnancy that the writing staff quickly skimmed over, being noted as one of the worst comics alongside one more day and 1990's green lantern. if people like Claremont said nothing then i doubt the writing staff would even decide to make her drink (cause effect), which improved greatly
