Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Wait, I might be thinking of someone else.

I have the feeling that James Gunn will make all characters aliens, even if they were originally human based. I think he wants Star Lord to be the only one from earth in the mix.

Mantis was actually a mutate, someone who was genetically altered by the Kree. So she wasn't exactly human, but she was born on Earth.

Oh, those wacky Kree and their genetic manipulation pranks.

It's also worth pointing out we already saw multiple human-like aliens in the first movie. They just didn't come from Earth. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to make her like they did with John C. Reilly and Glenn Close's characters.

In the Marvel universe, this is usually how it goes:

  • It was radiation.
  • It was the Super Soldier Serum.
  • It was the Kree.
  • It was the Celestials.
  • Fuck it, it's magic.

Funny story: the X-Men were implied to be both caused by radiation (the atomic bomb testing in Lee's original run), Celestials (in the Earth X continuity), and the Super Soldier Serum (in the Ultimate universe).

[up]Actually, it's even easier. "It was Science." Because it doesn't matter if it's human science or alien science, it is still science, and in the MCU, even magic is science.

Of course! Don't you know anything about science!

Damn, so that article from several months ago was spot on. Haven't decided yet whether I like it or if it looks a little too out of place due to resembling sequins.

If you think it looks like sequins, then you haven't spent enough time around sequins.

Marvel magic has always been cosmic related. It's the science our sciences doesn't explain. http://www.writeups.org/fiche.php?id=2801

Hmm the t shirt pic is still really new age but the center chest piece has a bit of the chain mail design. I wish the films acknowledged costume changes sometimes...

I'm wondering now if Mantis might be another of Thanos' "children" or if they'll use Moondragon in that role.

[up] Both, maybe? I would like at least one to be a good guy to start with, though. I wonder how they'd end up joining.

Will Drax die so his daughter might live?

Wow the casting sheet is kinda messed up. woman have no choice but to stand on set as basically models while men can choose to be grungy and gritty. And it's worst because there's a guideline for how beautiful you must look.

Ok James Gunn explained the male part. More Ravangers

If they do anything with Moondragon, I doubt they'll keep her as Drax's daughter.

[up] Why's that? We never actually saw her die, we were only told of it. It's entirely possible that there's more to it than meets the eye.

I'm typing on a kindle tablet so it auto corrects most words I'm typing. For example if I do MCU it's much. I have to go back and.correct it myself. Mad annoying, especially when my fingers don't hit the right symbol. Then it does nothing sometimes by selecting the first option, which is wrong. Refresh the page to see the updates. Also I'm writing off the top of my head, which isn't proccssed all the time. And I'm tired about to sleep

Is this part of the MCU? Or its own thing?

Is its own thing, being done by Stan Lee's own company.

It's interesting because at some earlier point I believe Stan Lee previously observed people shouldn't Race Lift characters, but rather create new ones and make them great.

Now he seems to be willing to walk the walk too. What a guy.

[up] He's also stated that he was perfectly fine with race lifting the Human Torch in Fantastic Four. So he pretty much just says whatever he wants to at the time.
