Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd be so down for a Young Avengers movie somewhere down the line, with Cassie Lang, Amadeus Cho, etc.

The downside, at least for Cassie, is that her actress is so very young it would take a long time for something like that to be feasible.

I really don't get why so many people still claim that it was a box office disappointment.....
Because apparently the opening weekend was the lowest since Incredible Hulk. The difference, of course, is that Ant-Man went on to gross much more, making it an actual hit.

In regards to the question I asked long ago about using Big Hero 6, and forgive me for asking it again if I may have, but why couldn't it have gotten the Guardians Of The Galaxy treatment again?

[up][up][up]Honestly, the realistic time for something like this would be Phase 5 either way, because, well, there first will be sequels for Spider-man, Captain Marvel, Got G, Black Panther, Dr. Strange and Inhumans...even if one or two of those franchises underperform, there will still be more than enough to fill phase 4. And by the time Phase 5 rolls along, Cassie will be old enough.

[up][up] Yeah, that sounds like it could be right. It would need to be maybe six years minimum.

I'm not sure what you're asking. What does the Guardians of the Galaxy treatment mean exactly?

[up] Making a not-so-popular comic series popular via movie adaptations. I remember being told it didn't do well, compared to the original Go TG comics, so if a Go TG movie saved the comics, why couldn't it do the same for Big Hero Six?

Because the 2008 Guardians of the Galaxy series may not have been that popular, but it was pretty well loved. It was considered one of Marvel's best cosmic books ever, starting from Annihilation and stopping at The Thanos Imperative. The Guardians themselves have a long history going back to the '60s.

Conversely, Big Hero 6 has had, I believe, two mini-series, neither of which were any good or sold well.

[up][up]Since Big Hero 6 is now a well known property due to the very successful animated adaptation, it's not really comparable to Guardians of the Galaxy anymore.

Long term I'm not going to rule out anything, but Disney might want to keep the focus on the animated franchise for now and the slate is pretty full even with 3 movies a year, so I don't expect to see them in Live Action until phase 5 at least.

I was just gonna say yeah I don't think it's them having less faith in it it's that they're not going to confuse the brand by making a live-action Big Hero 6 when there's already a popular animated movie of it.

If you're asking why they didn't make a Big Hero 6 film before the cartoon one that's just because they're a very obscure property. So were the Guardians but there's a lot of characters who were probably higher up on the list.

Even compared to Guardians, Big Hero 6 is an extremely obscure property. It's a better fit for Disney Animation (where it can kind of be its own thing and then be left alone) instead of forcing Marvel Studios to make it work within their universe.

It's also important to note that Disney has a different focus - while Marvel is making a universe out of its own properties, and thus needs to balance place within the verse and pick teams based on potential and all that, Disney's thing is just adapting standalone tales to standalone films: in this case, the story they picked happened to be a modern one they had access to through Marvel.

While it is a superhero movie, where Disney is concerned it's not much different than Basil Of Baker Street or 101 Dalmatians, which I believe were likewise obscure when they got their hands on them.

The GOTG were obscure, but a fairly long-running series. It has been around since the 1970s after all, even if the line-up changed in-between. The Big Hero 6 was Marvel trying to cash in on the Manga fans. It is not just obscure, it was virtually unknown, more or less the bottom of the barrel. That's more or less why Disney picked it for an animated movie, because they could basically do with it whatever they want without a lot of fans complaining that they kiddify their favourite comic book.

I'll be a little disappointed if it just turns out to be the D23 trailer without any new footage. They're really keeping Zemo on lockdown aren't they?

No surprise there...Best way to ensure that most of the geek community will see it in a state of mind in which they are exited for everything either way.

They've had several more months since then to work on stuff that could be used in the trailer so who knows.

I was fully expecting this. I thought it was possible that they'd drop the first teaser on a TV show (either a late-night exclusive premier like the Guardians trailer on Kimmel, or during an episode of Agents of SHIELD), and then do the full teaser trailer with Episode VII, but that was a long shot.

Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 casts Pom Klementieff.

Let the speculation begin as who she will play. Leading contender: Mantis!

It says they were specifically looking at Asian women so yeah. I think she's Mantis.

[up]Does this mean Mantis is going to be an alien in the MCU? (Like Drax?)

Mantis is an alien in the comics too.

[up]...Correct me if I'm wrong, but last time I checked, Mantis was an Asian earth-woman and the daughter of a Supervillain named Libra who was raised by Kree space-monks in a Veitnam monastery before paling around with the Avengers for a while and shakking the Swordman's possessed glowing corpse, upon which she turned green and gave birth to a cosmic Christ figure. In other words, I'm pretty darn sure she isn't an alien, no offense.
