Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

My #1 seed for Carol will always and forever be, until the official casting is made, motherfucking Brienne of Tarth.

Could Emma Stone play Carol Danvers? She's a bit young now but by the time the movie comes out she'll have aged another four years.

Frankly, I've never been convinced that what fans actually want is Miles Morales, and are instead looking for Peter Parker to be black. Which I wouldn't have a problem with, but be fucking honest with yourself.

And that's my last word on the matter.

[up] I don't see it. Emma Stone has never struck me as being particularly interested in or suited toward Action Girl roles.

This is an objectively wrong statement. Even discounting that Black Widow is just as much a protagonist as any of the other Avengers in three of the four movies she's in (she's not terribly important in Iron Man 2), and assuming we're just talking about headliners, we also have Ant-Man and The Wasp.
Ant-Man and the Wasp may be coming out before Captain Marvel, but Captain Marvel was announced first and when it was announced, it was the first female-led MCU movie. And, in fact, it is still the first female-led MCU movie, since Ant-Man and the Wasp is going to have a female co-lead, rather than having just a single protagonist, like Captain Marvel.

My #1 seed for Carol will always and forever be, until the official casting is made, motherfucking Brienne of Tarth.

[up] See the second half of that paragraph that you ignored.

And as much as I enjoy Brienne (not so much in Season 5 when her job was just "stare gloomily at Winterfell"), and Captain Phasma is shaping up to be my favourite new Star Wars characters, I don't see Gwendoline Christie being Carol Danvers, no.

Her name is Gwendoline Christie, and while she would be a good choice, something tells me she's going to be busy playing Captain Phasma for a while. tongue

[up][up][up] We'll see. I'm not getting too attached to any TFA antagonists not named Supreme Commander Snoke. Not even Kylo Ren. Because somebody has to be this movie's Tarkin/Maul. That said, Phasma looks tailor-made to be the Sequel Trilogy's Boba Fett.

[up][up] She's actually be a pretty awesome Jennifer Walters.

I didn't ignore it, I just don't agree with it. Sharing a title with Scott does make her less of a headliner, because she is sharing the headline. She is not the lead, she is the co-lead. Which means she is sharing the title and screentime with Ant-Man. And while I am glad Marvel isn't called it Ant-Man 2, that doesn't make it any less true - heck, if they really wanted to, they could have called the movie The Wasp. So Captain Marvel is still the first female superhero who will headline her own movie.

She's got the figure of a woman who could punch the Hulk square in the face.
Gwendoline Christie as Titania!

Kostya: Probably not. But besides that, your female star being 6'3" means that the rest of your movie is going to be extraordinarily hard to cast. That's just a reality of acting. Height plays a huge role in how you're cast. For both men and women, actually.

...How would Phasma be the "Boba Fett" of the sequel trilogy? She's a Stormtrooper Captain while Boba Fett's a bounty hunter.

I'm referring to how her design is just...super badass. She's a chrome-plated, cloak-wearing Stormtrooper. She is, almost objectively, the coolest. cool

Also, Boba Fett is most likely still alive, since he survived the Sarlacc.

[up] true. Phasma is pretty cool.

Look, I'm not saying she literally fills the same role as Boba Fett. I'm saying that her entire role could be Kylo Ren pointing to her and saying "No disintegrations" and people would still be talking about her because she just oozes cool.

EDIT: And you weren't responding to me there. Derp. XP

I still think it's going to be revealed that it's not actually Boba Fett, just someone wearing Mandalorian armor. Because the real Boba Fett is super dead.

Technically speaking, Black Widow isn't a protagonist but a deuteragonist.

As for Ant-Man and the Wasp, depending on how that's executed it may be the same case, or Ant-Man may be the deuteragonist to Hope's protagonist. We don't know.

Ant-Man is actually kind of weird in the way it's structured. One could argue that what the movie is "about" is the relationships between fathers and daughters, and Scott and Hope are equally part of that story. Scott is the wayward father trying to do right by his daughter, and Hope is the wronged daughter learning to forgive her father.

Like, it's the same goddamn story, and they play different halves of it. Given that they're both in the title of the next one, I'm hoping their series kind of sticks with that structure. That their arcs dovetail with each other to show you a complete picture.

EDIT: Also, as long as I'm making wishes for Ant-Man sequels, more Michael Peña, please.

George Lucas has enough influence decide to whether Boba Fett lives or dies. He may not be in charge of the new movies anymore, but he's still the guy who created the franchise as well as the creative consultant for the The Force Awakens. Also, George Lucas confirmed in a meeting with Jonathan Rinzler, the head of the licensing division of Lucasarts, that Boba Fett is still alive.

But we're getting off subject.
