Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Reed Morano and Olivia Wilde talk about "Captain Marvel."
I haven't see any of Morano's movies, but Wilde seems like she might be really good as Carol Danvers.
Olivia Wilde?
Quick look through her IMDB page...I'm still backing Ronda Rousey.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.That.
Also, I don't think Roussey or say Gina Carano would be a good pick. Carol is a soldier given Flying Brick powers. So, I don't think you want someone super muscular to play her, because that doesn't really fit how she'd look pre-powers. And once she has powers, she's superstrong anyway (so there's some Muscles Are Meaningless).
Basically, you just need someone (i.e. Jessica Chastain; Emily Blunt) who could convincingly play a soldier and let special effects do the rest.
Olivia Wilde was pretty great as Quorra back in TRON: Legacy. She gave a lot of depth to a character who could've been just another generic sci-fi chick companion.
Why wouldn't it fit how she looked pre-powers?
She was in the military. Surely all that shirtless volleyball keeps air force people in shape
Forever liveblogging the AvengersAnd it's not like Carol would be doing a lot of grappling when she has her super powers. Which is basically the only reason you hire a wrestler or an MMA person, to see them do their stuff in the "real" world.
My various fanfics.I know we haven't even gotten out Peter Parker yet, but it's inevitable that we'll see Miles Morales put on the mask at some point. Even if it takes another reboot, somebody will try it eventually. So any thoughts on that? Personally I just hope they focus on the fact that it is a legacy character since we haven't seen that on camera.
Also, addressing Miles' invisibility with a little nod to the first Spider-Man movie would be funny. "Some spiders can change color to fit into the environment. It's a defense mechanism."
I don't think it's "inevitable" that Miles will get a movie at some point. I'm sure there are plenty of Legacy Characters who won't get time on the silver screen. Comics have been coming out regularly for decades, so there's no way comic book movies could ever possibly adapt everything, at least not without oversaturating the market so much that the popularity of comic book movies starts to seriously wane.
I mean, you never know what'll happen. Maybe some other version of Spider-Man will come out that's more popular than Miles, and that Spider-Man will get a movie while Miles just falls into obscurity.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.
I agree, somewhat. Spider-Gwen or any other spider character could always surpass Miles. It just feels inevitable to me given the backlash at the casting this time around. Everybody complaining about a white Peter Parker when in reality people are just not that excited about Peter Parker for the third time in 15 years. Miles seems like an option they'd pursue given those feelings.
Note: I know not everyone agree with this, and I don't want this to turn into another "Nova will never get a movie" type argument. When I said certain people didn't like the recasting I wasn't stating it as a universal fact. (Just wanted to clear that up.)
I like what Olivia said about flawed female superheroes.

I honestly would have taken either Miles or Gwen over another reboot but hopefully they'll show up eventually. Though it'd be really cool if Spider-Man 2099 cameos in something via the Time Stone.
Which is interesting because Carol Danvers doesn't have a lot of flaws. She had a serious drinking problem at one point but given how they mostly ignored Tony's alcoholism I have my doubts this will make it into the Captain Marvel movie.

Carol Danvers doesn't have flaws? No, she has plenty of flaws. For one thing, she didn't just have a serious drinking problem - she is a full blown alcoholic and was kicked off the Avengers because of it one time.
I'd be happy if they referenced it - they don't have to show it, but if they showed her going to an AA meeting or saying that she wants to go to one, that would be fine.

I wish they'd have kept Andrew just for the sake of not starting over. Not including the origin in this new version doesn't make a difference to me (and frankly I'd be fine with another origin given one was very simple and the other was slightly complex. I'd like to see where they go with that. I thought I should give up hope on any Spidey 2099 screentime but ten you brought up the Time Stone and now I'm hopeful again. :)
I wouldn't mind if the MCU Spider-Man did something like with the 2003 Hulk where the MCU version could kinda be viewed as a continuation of it (though I think Agents of SHIELD contradicted the 2003 Hulk eventually, but whatever). Maybe open the new Spidey movie with Gwen being dead and Harry being the Green Goblin, but leave the exact circumstances vague.
I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. The ideal Spider-Man solution for me would be to not show the origin of his powers. Start the film off with him already being the Spider-Man for some time, and just give a scene or two to establish "he was bitten by a radioactive spider, yadda yadda yadda, great power, great responsibility, dead uncles, yadda yadda."
Kinda like how when the Daredevil series starts up he's already been a masked vigilante for some time, even if he's still a bit of a newbie.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Quick note:
This is an objectively wrong statement. Even discounting that Black Widow is just as much a protagonist as any of the other Avengers in three of the four movies she's in (she's not terribly important in Iron Man 2), and assuming we're just talking about headliners, we also have Ant-Man and The Wasp. Just because she shares the title with Scott does not make Hope any less of a headliner, since it would've been really easy to just call it "Ant-Man 2."
Also with the "let female heroes be strong without having to be flawless" attitude, I really hope she gets it, and gets to work with Evangeline Lilly. Because that's the same kind of perspective Lilly brings to all of her work, and it really grounds her performance in a really great way, and it'd be awesome to see two kickass female characters working closely together and also being believable human beings. :P
Now that I think about it, if she wasn't already Hope van Dyne, Evangeline Lilly would have been very near to the top of my list for the role of Carol Danvers. Like, first or second choice. Emily Blunt is also a great choice.
Someone I saw on a Captain Marvel wishlist who is totally wrong for the part, but I keep forgetting I like and so felt compelled to come up with a part for is Mary Elizabeth Winstead. Maybe Jessica Drew? She'd be a pretty good Rogue if Marvel ever got the X-Men back, too.

I would have brought him up, but it was starting to sound a little crowded.
Oh God! Natural light!
