Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Sure, which is why I think it's a general dig, i doubt Ward knows of even cares about if his brother' seat would be up for reelection at the upcoming midterms. Hell he could have been saying that the trial would wrap up in time for the 2018 midterms campaign (2016 isn't midterms and trails can take a long time), or a hypothetical 2015 midterms campaign.

Ward was making a poetic dig about his brother being a politican, we shouldn't take it as a key factual statement about the year that it happens.

People say things that don't make sense. People exaggerate. People lie.

I'm just going to assume that Season 2 started in September 2014 and ended in May 2015 because that makes the most sense.

So what do you guys think about Thor: Ragnarok?

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?

It was a wonderful movie! Definitely the best Thor movie in a long time. I love what they did with the Enchantress and Skurge and Bruce Banner's confrontation with the Hulk was just Oscar worthy.

Although having Jane Foster pick up Mjolnir and become the new Thor (if only for the climax of the film and then hand it back to old Thor) will surely cause a kerfuffle in the fandom.

Regardine "all winter" comment:

Since Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has the characters traveling all over the world, maybe in-between Seasons 1 and 2 they spent a lot of time in the Southern Hemisphere, where June, July, and August are the winter months.

So what do you guys think about Thor: Ragnarok?

Too much Loki and a lame villain. Maybe Thor 4 will buck the trend.

[up][up]But Talbot doesn't, and he is the one who makes the comment.

Seeing as Talbot chased them into Canada I'd say it's entirely possible he chased them into the Southern Hemisphere. Though I stand that he'd just speaking for dramatic effect and not being exactly factual.

Ragnarok needed more Loki. Yes, I know he had 2 hours of screentime out of 2 hours and ten minutes but couldn't they just have given him those extra 10 minutes. Fucking Marvel always short-changing Loki

I don't mean to be negative but those ten minutes without Loki were the worst ten minutes of the movie.

Like we really needed to see Thor and Hulk playing charades for ten minutes

But that was Oscar level acting. Really shows Hemsworth and Ruffalo's acting chops.

In addition, the romantic chemistry between Black Widow and Thor left much to be desired. I don't know who decided to just shoehorn the relationship in, but it needed a lot more setup in their interactions in previous films for us to buy it now.

You're forgetting that that wasn't Black Widow. It was an actress pretending she was Black Widow.

I just really liked Stan Lee's cameo as Loki.

I actually found that bit sort of pretentious until Loki's manifestation as Stan Lee later in the film. Then it was clever.

The death scenes were pretty pointless, though. I mean if they had properly established the Warrior Three beforehand, but I didn't even notice that they exchanged all of the actors for them until I read the end credits, that's how boring they were.

The mid-credit scene is a cruel cliff-hanger, though. Not that I really think that Thanos will kill Loki, but nevertheless....

It needed more Balder. Like seriously, he gets killed and I'm all like "who the fuck is he?", and then boom, it's Balder!

Also, Kat Dennings had nice boobs.

They really redeemed Selvig's character in Ragnarok. Especially when he turned out to actually be a Celestial.

I felt like the sex scene was a bit too explicit. That kind of thing might be okay in the Netflix shows, but for a PG-13 movie, it was just too much. Kids watch these things too, y'know.

I really liked the twist where Darcy was the true Mandarin, but feel like they should have saved that for the Iron Man 4 film they teased in the second stinger.
