Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

White is the worst color to be wearing in any profession in which you can reasonably expect your clothes to get blood on them regularly, whether your own or that of others.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.@nervmeister: I think you're missing the point. Tobias was able to put into words what I couldn't: Tony's greatest, most effective enemies are the ones he can't beat with Iron Man. The Mandarin, for all his mystical powers, is still only a man. In the end, he'd find a way to win using some clever trick - he might have to think outside of the box, but that's hardly anything new for him. Even if he has a hard time at first, I have a hard time imagining that the resolution won't involve some form of punching.
But alcoholism, the realization of how insignificant our lives truly are...that's considerably more complicated. There might be cosmic or mystic forces with a vast difference in power that he can't fight in his usual way, but those aren't really villains for Iron Man.
Oh God! Natural light!Considering he is not bulletproof, bullet resistant, or even using any form of shield of armor there is no good reason for him to stand out and without the ability of someone like Spider-man he can't even use dodging as a reason to stand out.
Superman, Captain America, they've got reason to stand out. They draw the eye, which means they draw attack or bullets and lasers, especially away from civilians or squishier/stealthier heroes.
Guys like Black Widow or Batman or Black Panther have the darkness to make them harder to hit in scenarios where they blend in.
Moon Knight is none of these things and is therefore, in fact, a loon.
And I guess there aren't any, or many, female Batman Expies because I guess that's just not how we make female superheroes.
We should fix that.

The Blog The ArtPossibly the most influential thing(s) that a villain did to Tony was giving him the realization that his creations and legacy were no longer under his control, then that his shrine to his ego was also being used as an engine to destruction (as apposed to being stolen), followed by learning that he was soon to be helpless to do anything about it.
Since pretty much everything left about Tony's flaws are internal, it's difficult for a single external threat.
I've always thought that's why the universe needed an Anti-Tony (either as a person, or as an organization) that stuck: Tony has strived to ensure that he's the only one who can do what he can, because he thinks that controlling such things is the only way he can keep everyone safe. The realization that no matter what he does there are people out there who will always ensure that the bad guys will be able to up the ante hasn't really come yet, since all his rivals were people he could kill or otherwise remove from play with (relative) ease, ruined their role by going full supervillain or were horribly incompetent, usually some combination thereof.
Something like that coming in his own film series probably would've bolstered his character flaws, though that's probably one of the few bits of characterization in that movie that didn't need more development over the universe - the obsession with handling everything himself and taking risks with people's lives because of it is well shown in the universe.
Police officers don't wear high vis jackets because they're TRYING to get shot; it's because just be announcing your presence as an enforcement of justice means civilians and perpetrators can instantly respond. Dressing up in all black to fight crime is massively idiotic to me because you'r going to be easily mistaken for another assailant by the very people you're trying to help. Moreover Criminals are opportunists on the whole and will disengage from their crime given a reason; a reason you can't give them if you're not visible.
If it wasn't for the cape and hood I always thought Moonknight had the best costume in terms of practicality.
Look, there is very good reason why Moon Knight wears white.
It's so bad guys can see him coming.
Oh, you think I'm kidding? I'm not.
Officer: You're crazy.
Mr. Knight: It's been said.
Officer: Also, I hate to be the one to point this out, but wearing a white suit...he's kinda going to see you coming.
Mr. Knight: That's the part I like.
I asked a question two pages ago, but it looks like it got buried, so here it is again:
Why exactly? Because news that huge would obliterate the Internet twice and that's not always a good thing? Also, Marvel and Sony denied the Spider-Man deal at first? Don't recall hearing about that...
Tony's greatest, most effective enemies are the ones he can't beat with Iron Man.
Only enemies like that I can think of who aren't overpowered (relatively speaking) or hax are the Chessmaster types who use litigation, manipulation, and other tricks involving boatloads of strategically distributed cash to screw heroes over without so much as raising a fist while staying squeaky clean in the eyes of the law.

Batman's never going away.
And on a day of debunked bullshit, here's some confirmation: Mark Ruffalo is in negotiations for Thor: Ragnarok
.
@Bad Wolf, please, I'm the first person one would go for for those. I have an entire pantheon of superheroes, virtually none even close to being Batman. I could show you but I have long learned no one cares about my original stuff.
I just found it interesting that we can't think of a woman superhero that is built from a similar mold even though we have a surplus of male heroes that do.
The Blog The ArtWe could swap original stuff sometime maybe.
I'd need to finish up some stories though.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersTo answer the question: Fan4stic is still in theatres in some countries and then there are the DVD sales. Even if there is a deal between Fox and Marvel, Fox would want to keep it quiet. They are keeping up the fiction (and I have no doubt that in this case) that they are planning to do a sequel for the same reason.
In case of the Sony/Marvel deal, we know that the two studios were already talking with each other about it when everyone still thought that it would be unlikely because of the Sony hack. There were some rumors though, but also denials from certain sources. Even after the hack the studios kept quiet that they went back to the negotiation table until the day they announced it...in this case, they most likely kept it quiet because it involved a lot of reshuffling within Sony, and so that they could put a good spin on the news.

"'Who wears white to a superhero fight?'"
One who gives a damn about FASHION, that's who! Actually, there was an issue where he took the time to explain why he considered it pragmatic to stand out like that.
