Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up]Good observation. Stane paralyzing him and casually removing his "heart" might have been a nastier blow to him than any thrashing he's received thus far. And there's that look he had on his face when Loki was seemingly about to brainwash him.

Also, how badly does Tony react to having his tech go out of control or get misused by others?

[up]Well he was cracking jokes throughout Ultron so, not all that badly.

Ok, who let Light Yagami in here?

[up]Okay. So getting caught defenseless is his number 1 panic button. So maybe villains who are more stealth oriented could unhinge Tony more.

Hmm. Yeah, they should probably bring in the Ghost.

Yep. Tony likes to believe he's in control of things. Being helpless is his greatest fear, which is difficult to pull off with a villain because villains are things he can approach as an engineer. This is a guy who agitated Banner when he first met him because he wanted to see the Hulk; he has no fear of physical threats.

His first response when faced with something he can't deal with is to go to his workshop and build something to deal with it. If you throw giant dudes at him, he'll build giant weapons. If you throw invisible dudes at him, he'll build a radar that detects invisible people. If you throw acid-spitting dudes at him, he'll build armored plating that's resistant to the acid. Whatever you throw at him, he builds countermeasures and punches its face in. This is his M.O.

We even see him trying to do it after being traumatized by the wormhole in both Iron Man 3 and Age of Ultron. He's stared into the abyss and seen infinity staring back at him, and now he's trying to build something to beat it. First the House Party armory, then Ultron, then Vision.

From the comics, the biggest thing that usually gets under his skin is magic because he can't just build an anti-magic armor or anti-magic weapons or magic-proof shields. It's not something he can approach scientifically and that cripples his ability to build responses to it. If you throw a dude that can turn people into frogs at him, how do you build a Don't-Become-Frogs Suit?

This is actually why Doom works so well as a nemesis to Stark and Strange in the comics: because he is basically a Fusion Dance of the two. Strange can match him spell for spell but Doom has technological advances Strange can't even conceive of, while Stark may be able to out-armor Doom but can't handle his incredible sorcery.

I don't know, I kind of like the idea that Tony's deepest fears are existential ones. Even when Stane ripped out his heart, Tony was able to replace it and then beat Stane into the ground. As long as Tony can punch it or snark at it, he's fine. But a wormhole's just part of the universe. It's not trying to kill anybody, it just is.

I think an additional wrinkle is that it's nobody's fault but Tony's if he dies in the wormhole (I mean, obviously it's the Chitauri's fault for making Tony go up there, but is that how Tony sees it?). With human adversaries, Tony can plan and build, but there's always a chance that someone will outsmart him temporarily. In which case, Tony just needs a few scenes to catch his breath and build a better suit. But if Tony dies not to enemy action but because of natural hazards, it's all on him.

Tl,Dr: Tony can't handle the idea that he's not good enough to handle every problem.

Edit: Tobias Drake said it better.[up]

Bruce: Hey i'm feeling a headache coming on. Do you have any Advil?

Tony: No but I can build you a suit for it. Give me 12 hours.

Bruce: Uh, nevermind.

12 hours later.

Tony: Okay the suit is done. Get in.

Bruce: Um...the headache's already pa-

Tony: -slaps something onto Bruce's wrist and presses a button-

-iron man parts starts flying onto Bruce's body-

Bruce- This....is....making me AAAANGRY!!!!

The Hulk: AAAAARRRRGGG

Tony: Good thing, I prepared for that and had the suit expand with the Hulk. You can thank me later, Brucey.

The Hulk jumps out the window and goes on a rampage in his new iron man suit.

If Moon Knight gets a series, they need to have a fight scene set to the song Moondance.

Also, I'm doing a rewatch of the MCU right now, and I just want to say how much The First Avenger rocks.

[up]It does, doesn't it? It's the most underrated movie in the MCU imho.

The whole MCU or just the movie? In release or timeline order?

[up] Also one with Dancing in the Moonlight.

And if anything tragic happens to Moon Knight it has to happen to Moonlight Sonata playing in the background.

The last episode of the season should end with this song in the credits.

@44855

Now it makes even more sense why Mandarin is Tony's main nemesis in the comics (I will abstain from launching into another "Manda-rant" both out of courtesy and for health reasons, so please dont run). The rings give him a plethora of different powers. And worse still, he has chi abilities which is pretty much martial arts magic in Marvel. So no armor Tony equips will be able to fully counter him.

You know...it seen Tony like to build things each time he is afraid: first bunch of armor, one of them almost choke her girlfriend, them he build pretty much marvel Skynet....

That means his next step will be creating the marvel version of death star, and since disney owns marvel he can totally do it

I calling in, Marvel-death-star, right there by Tony stark

@Fox Box Kid, I did but I got that out of my system when I first met Moon Knight in the Ultimate Spider-man comics.

Okay, no I didn't, 'Who wears white to a superhero fight?'

It would be interesting if he did get a show and he definitely would fit, being a street level hero, that would be perfect for the Netflix stuff. It would definitely help me get a better read on him since he hasn't exactly gotten much in the way of adaptations or anything.

And then we can have our Marvel Batman-Expies Alliance movie or series! Starring Iron Man, Daredevil, Black Panther, and Moon Knight!
