Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Honestly...just based on the description, the character has more in common with Yu-gi-oh.

Never thought I'd see someone type that.

"You must use the power of the cards, Marc."

"Okay."

"...shit, did you just carve up that guy's face with a children's card game?"

Also, Dark Knight - Moon Knight seems like a pretty blatant parallel.

If Spector was a more comedic character I don't think anybody would be questioning that he's an obvious parody of Batman. HE IS VENGEANCE. HE IS THE (K)NIGHT. HE IS...Mooooooooooooon!!!!

He is the one named (Sailor) Moon Knight.

Well, think about it...they are both characters possessed by an Egyptian spirit and as far as I remember the show was obsessed with putting the character in front of the moon. So...there is that.

I wasn't even making that up (well, the children's card game part, yes): Moon Knight totally carved off his arch-enemy's face. With a sickle, but still.

Swan: I'm rewatching Yu-Gi-Oh, and have not noticed any particular penchant for putting him in front of the moon.

Oh, just the first series then. I really can't say anything about the moon part as I remember no such pattern.

Can we talk about Spider-Man? Recently I scrolled through some old Sony rumors/leaks or whatever and I heard they were going to introduce Spidey 2099 at some point.

[up] I begged for other universes for a long time

They were going to make a lot of movies. They were trying to do a whole Spider-Man Cinematic Universe.

What I heard was that it would culminate in Spider-Man, Venom, Black Cat, and Spidey 2099 fighting against carnage. I kind of just wanted to see that happen more than anything. ;_;

I'm not particularly interested in the 2099 universe, but I would love a movie about Marvel 1602.

Marvel 1602 was weird.

I didn't like it very much.

It was made for Shakespeare nerds.

I liked it a lot. It was good when Gaiman was doing it.

[up][up]I thought it was......novel. Just wanted to see how our familiar characters would be imagined in "ye olde" fashion. Its take on Doctor Strange, Thor, and the Fantastic Four were fairly cool.

[up][up] You should read 1602: Witch Hunter Angela. It's very much like Gaiman's version, except weirder and with more Shakespeare jokes. Oh and it has gorgeous artwork by Stephanie Hans.

You know what I'd like to see more of? Spider-Man Noir.

Of all the 2099 stuff, Spider-Man was pretty easily the best, so I wouldn't mind them exploring that some more. Maybe as an animated series.

Sony PLANNED a lot but whether or not they actually would have been able to make them is another story.

Anyone remember when there was gonna be a whole "X-Men Origins" series of solo movies?

The first one was about Wolverine, the second one was about Magneto. When the Wolverine one tanked, parts of the Magneto one were folded into First Class.

That was my point. Sony had these grand sweeping ideas for a whole Spider-Man Cinematic Universe but it only takes one underperformer to bring down the whole thing.
