Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I feel like Thor would find Loki out, and then Loki would have him taken to a whole other planet. (Sakaar.) How Hulk got there is also a factor though, as they did specifically show Hulk flying off into *the distance* and not space explicitly.

That reminds me (apologies if I brought this up before).

I know it's not going to happen, because Banner isn't in the movie, but I had this idea where at the end of Civil War, Steve, Tony and their respective groups would be reconciled and Steve would say something like "I'm glad we're friends again. Please don't do anything as extreme in the future."

Tony would reply, "No problem, buddy" and then would add sheepishly that by the way, he had shot the Hulk into space at the beginning of the conflict. Then he'd say, "but we're still cool, right?"

And then you'd have an Everyone Laughs Ending.

Edit- And I guess then you would have one of those James Bond-style captions on the screen stating, "The Avengers will return in 'World War: Hulk'."

"What, like drop a city out of the sky?"

Ooh, Kyle and Yost are back. Their work wasn't the greatest in the second movie but in hindsight it might not have been their fault.

And I wonder if that was their logic when hiring for The Winter Soldier. Granted, the Russos were a backup choice after F. Gary Gray dropped out.

Wait, how long have we known that Taika Waititi was directing Ragnarok? Because that's awesome!

Also, how long have Marvel been trying to get F. Gary Grey to direct something? His name is being attached to Black Panther now.

EDIT: Or at least it was. I don't know if it's still on the table after he signed on for Fast 8.

Uh, where did you hear that? I never heard anything about F. Gary Gray being their first choice for Winter Soldier. I heard he was their choice for Black Panther, but that's it.

That's just Screenrant though. I wouldn't trust anything they write. [lol]

thats an easy rumor to say when Thor Dark World had Valkyria concept art intended to appear -___-. and its even easier to say its dark and edgier when its apocalyptic by default though that just leads to a new aesthetic. still these films will never go deep down into that trope. dark world was meant to head in this territory, so Ragnarok is the final try. meanwhile for Hulk to appear i would roll my eyes until confirmed but someone said marvel studios acknowledged it in twitter. i dont trust said person either.

meh rumors

I heard something about Seth being the villain, but I have no clue why it wouldn't be Surtur.

Yeah, I doubt it is Seth, considering he is an Egyptian god and not a Norse one.

I'm thinking, actually, that they might skip Surtur completely (because "bad guy wants to destroy everything" is a little too repetitive) and go with Hela as the Big Bad. That would be different - she's a female main bad guy, something we really haven't seen the movies do (there have been female henchmen, but that's it) - and it would tie into the Valkyries (they bring the dead to Hel) and make it super dark.

[up][up]"Seth" just makes me think of that dude from Family Guy.

[up][up]My only reservation about Hela, as cool as she is, is that her villainous motive would likely be "rule Asgard", like Loki's. That would feel a bit stale. Though they could make it an interesting parallel to Loki's grab for power in the first Thor movie. Loki wanted to win Odin's adoration by committing genocide against a race of giants. Hela in contrast is a god of the afterlife, so killing countless people would just mean more subjects for her kingdom. So she could honestly see nothing remotely morally wrong with murder, period since they're up and walking around in her realm (Nifelheim) anyways. And since she sees herself as being an awesome and just ruler, it's all one big happy ending for all. Plus she has her own daddy issues, and probably wouldn't mind taking away his current control of Asgard out of spite.

[up][up]hela generally always wanted thor's soul the most and expand her territory. shes nothing special though has a lengthily history of appearing in various story arcs. they are too convoluted and random to translate in live action, so just make something up relevant to the script.

meanwhile Val is just Sif but believes strongly she needs no man to do whatever. shes broad enough to do whatever.

[up] cairo word drop in winter soldier > appearance somewhere down the line > Spector gets name dropped.

[up]omg no stop it. moonknight is not marvel's batman! thats night thrasher and even that is just in general terms of origin. none of Marvel's rich, philanthropist charcters are really nothing like Batman/Bruce Wayne. for the lesser larger than life characters they're uniquely different, daredevil, punisher, shang chi, chance, dusk etc

Yeah, Black Panther is Marvel's Batman. If Batman were a king. And cat based.

There are several characters that could be called Marvel's Batman. There's no reason to single out one.

x4[up]Um, yes he is. His creator, Doug Moench, really really wanted to write Batman, so he created the Marvel equivalent:

  • Millionaire Playboy who dedicates himself Crimefighting with Cash.
  • Has a butler/valet who helps him with his crimefighting (Alfred/Frenchie).
  • Uses a nighttime motif with his crimefighting (bats/the moon), including flying machines (Batplane/Mooncopter).

Seriously, Doug Moench created him to be the Marvel Batman, the only difference being his origin. Even his name - Moon Knight - is similar to the Dark Knight. Moon Knight later deviated more from Batman by getting multiple personalities and then going insane and then having that be a part of the Khonshu's possession of him, but still: he's Marvel's insane Batman.

(Moench later went on to write the real Batman, so he got his wish.)

[up][up] I will not consider this idea until you present me with a line-up. :P

[up] Moench eventually did write Batman.

Well, Black Panther and Moon Knight obviously. Possibly Tony Stark?
