Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It's weird that we already have teasers for Daredevil season 2 but basically nothing for Iron Fist.

Supposedly they have no idea what to do with him. It's probably going to be pretty special effects-intensive.

Random rambling.

I have far more time remembering Hawkeye's real name than anyone else.

What is weird about that? Daredevil 2 is scheduled for spring, and I guess next year in fall we will see Luke Cage. It will be a long time until we finally get to Iron Fist (though I guess he might turn up in Luke Cage).

Luke Cage has already started shooting, hasn't it? Jessica Jones is done and Iron Fist is still far off.

My guess is that Jessica Jones will probably get a second season as well.

@dRoy-

Well, he is Hawkeye and no one cares about Hawkeye.

I've noticed that I do too. Ditto for Black Widow. I think it's because as spies, they use their codenames as much as their real names. Also, Clint Barton is a bit confusing being a case of Two First Names (although, so is Steve Rogers).

Weirdly, I notice with Captain America and crew I tend to alternate between nicknames and codenames- so Steve/Cap; Bucky/Winter Soldier; Sam/Falcon.

I think Tony is the only person I call mostly by real name- probably because Tony Stark is as famous in-universe and out as Iron Man.

I think it's because he doesn't talk with people that aren't Natasha that often. He's the least developed of the Avengers.

[up] Interesting, although I'm a little worried that it'll take away time from other characters that I'm interested in seeing.

Well, not really. Daredevil season 2 will be released much sooner. They are already producing it. Iron Fist is still relatively far away.

Wait, really?

That's... weird. I assumed Daredevil season 2 was coming after Defenders.

Nope, Daredevil Season 2 is coming next year around May, just like Season 1 did. It's because it was a big hit for Netflix, so they wanted another season almost immediately.

I think it's kind of silly that they're waiting so long for Iron Fist and Luke Cage. I think it would make more sense to release Cage in the late winter and then release Iron Fist alongside Daredevil season 2. Then they could release Defenders over the summer.

I think it might be a case of lack of resources. It's possible Netflix (even with the aid of marvel studios) doesn't have the resources to juggle so many tv shows at such a close time period.

[up][up] Luke Cage is coming next year. They're currently working on it.

Actually, hang on. Do the Netflix tv shows come under the movie division or the tv division of Marvel studios? Because the Netflix tv shows are also produced by ABC studios.

Technically the Netflix tv shows are actually Web Original.

They absolutely are not Web Original. Netflix is a television network, albeit a very unorthodox one.

Netflix shows get nominated for Emmys. Therefore they are TV.

The Netflix shows fall under Marvel TV (hence why Jeph Loeb shows up for Agents of SHIELD and Daredevil).

It probably helps that they already have a lot of the core cast and staff of Daredevil assembled already, reducing start-up time on the second season. Whereas for Iron Fist they're still stuck on the early planning stages.

higherbrainpattern: It's coming next year but unless I'm mistaken it's coming late next year. We probably won't get Defenders until 2017 at this rate. I'm just saying they should have tried to have it out next year instead.

[up] I wouldn't be opposed to that. It would be cooler if Kamala got her own movie, though.

When we're done, there won't be anything left.
