Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Oh, I'm not saying they wouldn't put it in production, I just don't think they'd announce it. That way it's easier to cancel in the unlikely scenario that, say, Doctor Strange comes out and bombs or something.

Once they say, "We are definitively and without question making this movie," then they have to deal with disappointing fans if they don't make the movie. By planning a sequel but holding off on announcement until they're certain it's a thing they both can and will follow through on, it's easier to sweep it under the rug if it doesn't get made.

Like that Hulk movie starring the Leader that was clearly set up in the first Hulk movie but has never been announced.

I also wonder if they can do anything with She-Hulk in the movies. Their Universal distribution deal applies to the Hulk, I know, but does it include She-Hulk?

[up][up] Now that I think it over, you might be right. At least in the case of Doctor Strange, I was thinking more in terms of what movies will actually be in 2020 rather then what movies they would announce today are coming in 2020.

Considering that She-Hulk constantly breaks the fourth wall, it would be difficult to fit her into the MCU. Perhaps in a mostly isolated TV-Show, and that wouldn't really do the character justice.

They could do her without the fourth-wall breaking. She mostly does it for her legal cases, with things like the use of older comics as evidence; this can be written around.

It wouldn't really be the same, though.

When was the last time She-Hulk broke the fourth wall? Isn't that mostly a Deadpool thing these days?

That's Deadpool's thing now yeah, though she does occasionally still do it. They even had a scene in Marvel vs. Capcom where she breaks the fourth wall to complain about how she was breaking the fourth wall way before Deadpool made it popular.

She only really broke the fourth wall in Sensational She-Hulk. In her most recent book, she didn't break it at all - she was just simply a superhuman lawyer.

Three films a year model! Yes! At first on hearing that Ant-Man and The Wasp had been slotted in I thought Captain Marvel would be knocked behind infinity war 2, but actually, it's still cool! Yes! I got mote diversity in the MCU slate when I was expecting less!

Marvel's model seems to be at least one sequel and new property a year. New properties will have a sequel slot reserved, but not committed to, and characters or elements will appear in an upcoming cross over before release to encourage investment in these new characters.

I suspect that 2 of the empty slots aren't so much planned for films that they don't want to announce as planned to be filled with sequels to something. They might to know what they'll be sequels to, but they probably realise that they're going to have something that was a good enough success to merit a sequel by that point. Be it Guardians 3, Ant Man 3, Strange 2, Captain Mavel 2, Black Panther 2, Spider Man 2 or something else. In the end something will be in a position to get a sequel at that point and they can slot it in.

Sadly I don't think we will get a Black Widow solo film, not just because of the lack of interest in a no-power badass normal film, but also because Black Widow is now tied to but not central to the existing arch. Captain American films can push the greater marvel arch forward, but a Black Widow film done right is going to be a spy film, a Bond style one. The kind of stuff we want to see Black Widow do is the stuff she did solo while working for SHEILD or the Russians, but I don't think they're taking the character is that direction now, she's part of a team and part of the establishment, her going off solo to do cool Bond style spy stuff may not fit with where she is in universe.

It's the same reason I doubt we'll get a Vison film or a Scarlet Witch film, those characters are now tied to the Avengers and the non-avengers multi-character films, they don't really operate solo. Hell I'd say that Hulk may also be going that way. Though Hulk may be saved from it when they reach the point with tech that they can make proper character out of Hulk rather than Banner.

I wouldn't mind a Black Widow prequel in the vein of the Ant-Man flashbacks and whatever they're likely planning for the sequel. Or alternatively the execution is like The Winter Soldier or Guardians of the Galaxy and she's the leader of a ragtag team.

Scarlet Witch actually has her own upcoming solo series where she helps out witches. They could actually do something interesting with that. A wandering atoner.

Except she's not a witch in the MCU. She's a mutant gifted.

I'm iffy on the idea of a Black Widow movie. On the one hand she's pretty awesome and it would be neat to see her as the lead, but on the other I feel like she works better infiltrating everyone else's movies and being a general-purpose MCU character like Hawkeye and Fury rather than having her own separate series.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

If we do get a Widow movie, I would hope it would be set in the past and had tons of Dramatic Irony about SHIELD.

IIRC her magic wasn't related to her mutant powers either, she learned them by making a pact with Cthon.

[up] Again, that's in the comic book universe. In the MCU, nothing like that has ever happened.

On a different note, Disney managed to move past the 4 billion mark again. And the year is not even close to being over.

It is kind of scary what will happen if they ever manage to put out a good Pixar movie, a good Animation Studio movie, three Marvel Blockbusters and one of their fairy tale movies in one year...

They're one Marvel film short of that for 2016, but they do have the stand alone Star Wars film Rogue One and Pete's Dragon.

I just realized...not only is February American Black history month, Captain Marvel is now hitting the theatres on international women's day.
