Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I don't think we knew how many spin-offs there were until the leaks. Publicly they only announced four.

5 years sounds way too soon to try to reboot the franchise AGAIN. If they did get the rights back this soon it'd be way more likely for them to use the supporting players like Doctor Doom in other movies. Use Doom as the Big Bad of Iron Man 4 or something.

[up][up]They could always use them as supporting characters in a future Guardians movie.

[up]I was only going off of what was publicly known because it was brought up that Fox still plans to make FF 2. My point is that you can say a lot publicly but that doesn't mean it will amount to anything.

Boycotts rarely work, and in the case of movies, it just makes people look petty and ridiculous, and easy to call out on.

"This movie has a white male lead" is not really a reason most people would be able to get behind for a boycott. the majority of people are indifferent.

Heck, the majority of Marvel fans were indifferent.

Looking at the new slate, I think of the three 2020 films, I think only one will be about a new title character.

Doctor Strange 2 is a reasonably sure bet, and the other sequel will probably be either Guardians of the Galaxy 3 or MCU Spider-Man 2. The Captain America franchise will most likely be on hiatus for Phase 4, partly because Chris Evans wants to focus on directing and partly because they need to put a lot of their earlier properties on hiatus if they want to have any time at all for new properties.

For the one with a new title character, I would probably rule out Black Widow, not out of cynicism but because, as I said upthread, I just don't think Marvel wants to make a movie about a Badass Normal, male or female, preexisting fanbase or not. Ms. Marvel is possible, but I think they'll want to give it a bit more breathing room from Captain Marvel even if they give the film a greenlight.

One possibility I like is a feature film continuation of a TV/Netflix series, it would be tricky to structure to both flow naturally too and from the TV series and to avoid continuity lockout, but I believe it could be done. As for which TV/Netflix series, I'd say a Defenders movie is probably the most likely, but one based on a superpowered Agents of SHIELD character is also possible (most likely Quake).

Honestly, I say they should take any space they can get for Ms. Marvel.

As long as she's the newest one. Who's name I can barely spell and can't pronounce because it's not in my spell check and I can't spell a thing without it.

I wouldn't consider announcing a sequel to any film that has yet to come out to be a sure bet. So far, the MCU's been pretty good about waiting to see the reception before talking about adding more to one line or another.

I could be wrong but I imagine their Ant-Man situation might set the precedent for how they view sequel announcements. They waited until the movie was a proven success before announcing the sequel, so I imagine that will probably hold true for Doctor Strange as well.

Like I said earlier I'm still placing my chips on the Runaways at this point.

Although obviously a lot depends on how Civil War ends, I do wonder about the possibility of further Captain America movies with the next one(s) not involving Steve (like others, I'm thinking he's dead- or at least comic book dead- at the end of Civil War).

And I wonder whether Bucky or Sam will be the new Captain America (or maybe both?)

Bucky has the super strength, but he's a shellshocked wreck of a human being.

Sam lacks the super strength but has the right personality- although it would mean that Marvel would have to have another non-white lead character (horrors!)

The three films will be

  • Iron Man 4: Fine Here's Your Damn Mandarin, Are You Happy?
  • Iron Man 4.5: The Prologue
  • Runaways.

Confusingly, there will be no further Iron Man movies, and the studio will refuse to answer any and all questions about it.

I always figured it was Kam-ALL-a too. Like Kamal with an -a after it.

Chis Evans is in Infinity War.

True, if one of the "new movies" underperforms or gets really bad reviews, there won't be a sequel. But if we assume that each of them is another feather in Marvel's cap, then Phase 4 might end up being too crowded to introduce more characters.

I've never been entirely sure if it's KAM-a-la or Ka-MAL-a. The first one sounds more Arabic to me, but I'm uneducated white trash so, y'know, not exactly the best point-of-reference for cultural differences.

That is not wrong, but I think at this point a combination of Marvel being confident that everything they do will at worst be a modest success and the fact that anything they announce in the near future for 2020 is very flexible that they can shift things around as needed.

The first Guardians of the Galaxy was successful enough that any studio would be confident in green lighting a second sequel before the first sequel even came out. Spider-Man 2 has to happen at some point due to their deal with Sony. And I don't think they want to tie their hands and force everyone to wait a minimum of 5 years for a Doctor Strange sequel if the first one proves popular.
