Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

That was posted earlier.

As for how he transfers his powers to her it doesn't really matter. They could fiddle around with the details to fit whatever story they're telling.

Hmm, I know the movies do pretty well in Japan but what about their TV and Netflix series?

I have no idea about Netflix but live action superhero shows have always been big in Japan. They're pretty much the only place on Earth where their heroes still wear colorful spandex.

Japense aren't afraid of being light cute and extraordinarily whimsical in contrast to overly serious westerns.

If anything Japan has a bigger base for new superhero-esque content while we keep on rehashing the sane 300 something popular superheros though there has always been a trend of marvel anime/manga adaptions going on. Still even disc wars isn't huge and that wouldn't have been a thing if the MCU didn't exist.

Imashai is a huge marvel fans. He loves kitty. Toryama was once a superman fan or so it seemed when he parodied the character.guy behind yugioh likes hellboy. Meanwhile shows like Astro boy were influenced by Disney animation.

Thing is there's not much profit to be made for American superheros in general discounting live action films. You have to pay for forigen cotent on television so I guess flash arrow and agents of shield doesn't do good over there. same with animated shows like ttg and gog. You need to pay the cabal subscription but not for netfilx. American superheros have a much lower profile if they aren't in live action over there because their popularity is overshadowed by an abundance of manga characters. That doesn't mean people arent inspired by say batman. It's just well he's not solid snake. The whole I'm batman the best guy ever doesn't realm exist there

There's translated graphic novels but they're at American shops. Not a lot people buy them.

Japan is the second largest movie market out there I think. Both harry potter and superhero films hit hard. Still for the superhero genre it wasn't enough. Resdent evil made 50 mil, which is more than avengers

O marvel did higher a Japanese artist.

However the Netflix shows might resante with the japense audience since its cheap and accessible compared to normal tevelison. JJ especially has that splice of life and action drama asdocited with samurai famlacu and btoom so it might be the best to connect with the Japanese audince aside from iron fist, marvels mortal kombat

Well Japan has their own equivalent to superheroes in the sentai genre.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

Ant-Man Gaim, now with more fruit and Sengoku references.

We'll be getting some casting news for Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and Doctor Strange soon. And some news for the other movies before the year is out.

Japan is the second largest movie market out there I think.

That's actually China.

About Disney's animated shows...they actually have specific shows for specific age groups. So yes, they have a number of shows which are mind melting to watch, but those are made for three year olds. I think Disney is smart enough to know that the audience for Marvel animated series are not three year olds, and that ideally, those shows are accessible for older children but also enjoyable for older teens or even adults.

To be fair, Marvel Animation didn't really produce shows before the current run, so perhaps they just need some time to figure it out. But it is only a matter of time before Disney steps in. Perhaps they even have already.

[up]China is the biggest.

[up]You know, after all these people fearing Disney would ruin Marvel by involving themselves too much in their work, it's kinda hilarious to see someone suggesting they should step in to improve things^^

[up]That's because I never was one of those people. I really don't get where the notion that Marvel or Star Wars for that matter is so much more "adult" than what Disney usually creates even comes from. Star Wars is pretty much a fairy tale in space, and the whole hero genre is pretty much a take on the prince who swoops in and rescues to day, too.

[up]I know, and I agree^^ I just find that funny.

Still, the irony is, apparently Marvel has similar prejudice about Disney, since their typical argument to defend the poor quality of their animated series is to say "It's a kid show on Disney XD, of course it's not gonna be great".

[up]Honestly, it is only a matter of time until they will get set straight in this regard.

[up]I really hope you are right. But what makes you believe this? I mean, regardless of how much fans hate these shows, they do have good ratings for the most part.

If they're doing what they're supposed to be doing, then of course they have good ratings.

Which is why I am asking swan why Disney would interfere.

Swanpride Since: Jun, 2013

The question is which demographic Disney wants to hit with the shows...well, I guess they have an easier time to get the boys. But a lot of their shows which are not for the toddlers are designed in a way that they do address an older audience too. I wonder if Disney will be happy in the long term with the limited scope of the Marvel shows.

[up]... Fair enough. These shows might have success right now, but I doubt they will stay in memory. At least not in a good way.

Did we actually think it wouldn't focus on his origin? So far Spider-Man and Black Panther are the only ones that are confirmed to be heroes prior to their movies.

[up]Surprised that they're not giving BP the origin treatment given how he's pretty obscure outside the comics fanbase.
