Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So interesting aside, apparently Captain Marvel was only going to be one of a slew of new heroes they wanted to debut near the end of Age of Ultron, but they all ended up getting cut for the same reason.

Feige: We talk about [bringing back the One-Shots] a lot, actually. When we had fables like that, when we're talking about "What are we going to do with Howard? What are we going to do with Cosmo? We could do a One-Shot with Michael Pena."

Nah, I want to see him doing something really pretentious, like attending poetry night and having a strange encounter there.

Loeb used to be in charge of Animation before moving to TV, and people blame him for the downtick in the animated department's quality. I don't know who's in charge of it now but supposedly while the shows still aren't as great as EMH they're more or less decent.

Avengers Assemble has slowly been getting better. Most of the time its frustratingly mediocre though. But I watch it anyway because I am a fool who keeps being sweet talked by candied promises

Speaking of EMH, earlier someone mentioned that Mar-Vell wouldn't be able to transfer his powers to Carol without some technobabble thing, but that's exactly what he did in that show.

It's always weird to me when people expect adaptations to work exactly by the rules of the comics.

Well, Got G had a good start, I just wish the show would slow down once in a while and linger on an emotional moment. Whoever is behind it apparently thinks that the audience has zero attention span.

I asked about Perlmutter's influence because the shows feel like something a toy company would make up.

Is Marvel Animation still controlled by that guy who thought kids had zero attention span and so forced EMH to never have arcs that lasted very long (or something like that)?

[up][up] Jeph Loeb now runs Marvel Television, not specifically animation any more.

At least they kind of plan it as the conclusion to a Trilogy...but now that Chris Evans changed his tune, they might either do another one, or put him as a co-star into another of the MCU Franchises in Phase 4.

That's not new news... it's a year late.

[up] the end of Steve Roggers as we know him from earth concludes before he passes on his legacy to everyone in the universe during his fight against thanos. I would be surprised if there is a captain America 4 saring Chris Evans, being another political thriller by the Roussos.

Given how much Disney seems to love intelligent TV cartoons these days I'm not surprised that they got sick of Loeb's approach and kicked him over to live-action. The same network that runs Gravity Falls, Phineas and Ferb and Wander Over Yonder should not be expecting children to have trouble with complexity.

Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.

At least one of the shows mentioned has addressed this in-universe.

  • 1ST ADULT: Hey, at least I'm not all keyed up to watch a kid's show.
  • 2ND ADULT: I'll have you know that Duck-tective has a big mystery element! And a lot of humor that goes over kids' heads!
  • KID: I don't get a lot of it, but I like animals in human situations.

[up][up][up]I'm not saying Disney's not gonna air any lowest common denominator stuff, just that I can see why they wouldn't want that to be a blanket rule for an entire branch of their company.

Action cartoons generally operate on a different premise than comedies since for the most part, all their profitability comes from merchandise sales (since they're way more expensive to produce).

Disney could give less than a fuck if you're stupid or poorly written so long as you're bringing in the dough.

On a certain level, it makes sense. Ratings are a deeply flawed measure by which to rate a show's profitability. Merchandising allows them a completely different metric that has more to do with what the audience as a whole is watching and less to do with what a handful of select individuals who make up a tiny sliver of the audience likes.

Problem is, it's still flawed, just in different ways.

No, he protected her from an explosion and the explosion combined with his shield transfer his powers to hers. Much like her origin in, you know, the 616 universe.
