Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Everyone saying their best quotes from the comics would be...terrible and pointless. I mean, it wouldn't even make sense. The "You move" quote is about Civil War and is all about going against the flow of the majority — which wouldn't make sense at all against Thanos. And the "We would have words with thee" isn't even how Thor talks in the MCU, so it wouldn't have made any sense even against Ultron.
I mean, if you just put in quotes without context, then it's exactly like X-Men: The Last Stand where the Juggernaut said, "I'm the Juggernaut, bitch," merely because it was popular.

The "you move" speech is fucking terrible. "America is all about never compromising on anything, especially matters of principle. Hence why the most recent Congress has been so productive."
Maybe you'd be less disappointed if you stopped expecting things to be Carmen Sandiego movies.Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell Help Captain America Propose to Black Widow

The problem is that the speech seems intended to be contextless? Like, Cap isn't saying "always stick to your principles when the government decides to impact your life in some nebulously-defined way because superpowers." He's saying "always stick to your principles." Full stop. Without acknowledging that 1. a representative democracy is a form of government built on compromise and 2. some principles are fucking terrible.
I think the "you move" speech could work if it is adjusted a little bit. You just need to include some basic principles most people would consider worth to fight for...you know, freedom, justice, compassion...and say that even if the whole world is against you, you should always stand up for those principles, even if society is ready to compromise on ideals it agreed on out of misplaced fear.

Yeah, if he was saying "Imprisoning people without trial is wrong" or "Forcing people to sign up for government service is wrong," that would have been perfectly fine. But he actually said:
Doesn't matter what the press says. Doesn't matter what the politicians or the mobs say. Doesn't matter if the whole country decides that something wrong is something right. This nation was founded on one principle above all else: the requirement that we stand up for what we believe, no matter the odds or the consequences. When the mob and the press and the whole world tell you to move, your job is to plant yourself like a tree beside the river of truth, and tell the whole world - "No, you move."
I think a lot of people get caught up in the rhythm of the speech and forget that, well, no, the country wasn't founded on "standing up for what you believe," it was founded a bunch of rich people wanting to get away from an oppressive monarchy. And he's basically saying, "Screw democracy, just do what you believe it right no matter who tells you it's wrong."
See, I think he had a much better speech in What If #44, when he basically tells everyone that America is nothing without its ideals:
Well, I say America is nothing! Without its ideals — its commitment to the freedom of all men, America is a piece of trash!
A nation is nothing! A flag is a piece of cloth!
I fought Adolf Hitler not because America was great, but because it was fragile! I knew that liberty could be snuffed out here as in Nazi Germany! As a people, we were no different then them!

Thank you to everyone who is saying what I've been saying since Civil War: that speech is f*cking awful and glorifies the absolute worst possible approach to a democratic society.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.You know, sometimes I really wish that Civil War had been written by Warren Ellis and not Mark Millar. Can you imagine Captain America saying something like this: You want to know about voting. I'm here to tell you about voting. Imagine you're locked in a huge underground nightclub filled with sinners, whores, freaks and unnameable things that rape pit bulls for fun. And you ain't allowed out until you all vote on what you're going to do tonight. You like to put your feet up and watch "Republican Party Reservation". They like to have sex with normal people using knives, guns and brand-new sexual organs that you did not know existed. So you vote for television, and everyone else, as far as the eye can see, votes to fuck you with switchblades. That's voting. You're welcome.
...I don't want Captain America to make any speech involving "sinners and whores," thanks.

I think this
◊ is a good summary of what's wrong with Civil War.

Or if Thor said a variation of the "We would have words with thee" quote to Thanos.
