Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I ended up liking Scott a lot, but I think it's all because of Paul Rudd's performance. On paper Scott Lang is ridiculously vanilla and there's not a lot of room for him to grow. Now that his main story is over he works well as the comic relief (if Civil War is any indication) or The Lancer to Hope.
I would say we're being awfully optimistic about the chances of Marvel Studios ever promoting Hope to main character, but with the recent changes in leadership, it might actually happen.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.In the next movie Hope is elevated to main protagonist, only to abruptly die at the end and be immediately replaced by Janet in one of those classic storytelling moves that someone higher up assumes will make all groups happy even though it would obviously piss the fuck out of pretty much everyone.

Kinda agree with Son Of Sharknado here. What's wrong with just having the two of them star as both protagonist?
Something something penis demon. I dunno, I don't have the energy for my schtick today.
My various fanfics.I don't think there's anything wrong with them both being protagonists but since Hope's subplot in Ant-Man was all about how she can't be the protagonist even though she'd be good at it, I think more focus on her for a sequel with Scott being a supporting main character for her would be a nice change up.
Especially if the plot is in large or small part about rescuing Jan. Hope should definitely take the narrative heft of that.

Yeah, no.
Stop dismissing people who want female characters to have more substantial roles in movies and pop culture in general by acting like a redditer's bad impression of a radical feminist, thanks.

Well, to be fair, Tobias Drake did make rather questionable (at least so I feel) arguments about Hank being a chauvinist on that basis. No offense intended to him.

Gender issues aside, aren't Ant-Man and Wasp typically a duo anyways? Having Hope!Wasp debut in a standalone movie would be kinda like having Robin debut in a standalone movie instead of in a "Batman and Robin" movie. It could be done, but it'd be a little weird in my opinion.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon. They were a duo up until they divorced
They spend some time apart doing their own things (Leading the Avengers for Jan, contemplating suicide for Hank)
They started getting back together after Heroes reborn but weren't really a duo and then Jan decided she hated him and started making out with Hawkeye
After Jan 'died' in Secret Invasion, Hank became the Wasp and he had an Ant-Man and Wasp book with the irredeemable new Ant-Man.
But they're not really a duo these days, a Wasp and an Ant-Man.
Or being used very well these days either. That's not related, I just like to whine.

I suppose they could technically do it either way, but given that:
1. Ant-Man was successful enough to merit a sequel and Scott Lang was not generally considered to be a weak point of the movie.
2. Hope van Dyme was presented the prototype Wasp suit in the Stinger and rescuing Janet from the Quantum realm is almost certainly going to at least be a subplot, which is particularly personal for Hope.
I consider both Scott Lang and Hope van Dyme being major characters as a forgone conclusion for at least the next film. The only real question is if Marvel studios believes they will benefit the most from marketing it as an Ant-Man movie first, a Wasp movie first, or having them share the title. All completely regardless of what's actually in the movie's script.
And the answer to that question is going to hing on the success of Wonder Woman and Captain Marvel.
I think I'd want Hope to be the main hero of the next one, with Scott functioning more as a support, mostly only in the movie for his knowledge of how to Ant-man and hanging around because, well, Hank needs someone to watch out for him and Hope has an ACTUAL job.
But hey, manservant to a crazy old geezer supergenius pays the bills and child support, so he can't complain too much.
Calling it Ant-Man & Wasp would be ideal in my opinion.
The movie itself would showcase them both as protagonists without one being significantly more important than the other, though Scott would probably get prominence in trailers and advertising in order to ride on recognition from the first film.
You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique! When it comes to Ant-Man yes, I'd say Scott is the weakest character of the main cast. Hank Pym as characterized in the movie is actually a much more interesting character, with being a B grizzled unnyEarsLawyer scientist who uses ants to make coffee and has this whole massive guilt complex over the loss of his loved ones.
Like, I personally feel the movie would be a lot more interesting if it were about the retired Pym realizing the threat Darren poses and putting on the suit for One Last Job as he tries to redeem himself in the eyes of his daughter.
But I don't mind Scott either. I can live with it.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."The next movie will involve Hank creating a robotic Jan, named Jocasta. Scott and Hope will spend much of the movie trying to get Hank to take a vacation already.
Edit: So after seeing this,
◊ I'm thinking having Taskmaster appear in Antman might be kind of fun - that is, use him there while having him be the active villain somewhere else (which, with the exception of the Avengers movies, the MCU has yet to really do).
Having Tony Masters be a buddy of Scott's that just so happens to be a supervillain (or vice versa) would be pretty funny. In AOS or Iron Fist or wherever, he would be all threatening and antagonistic, but when we see him with Scott he's just chilling and swapping battle stories over a pint.
