Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

There are some characters that just shouldn't be attempted if you're not gonna go all out with them.

Whoa that's generic. And from one of the more artistically adventurous franchises no less.

Although the mismatched horns are oddly charming.

I don't get it. What's so bad about it?

[up]It lacks menace.....and girth.....and a chiseled granite-like face that takes up like 50-60 percent of his torso.

This is a weird thing to be saying of a giant lizard monster, but I swear he looks stoned. It might be the posture, but whenever I imagine him talking I just hear a deeper version of Shaggy's voice coming out of him.

[up]Exactly. He's supposed to be a hulking hate-powered abomination that even Odin is wary of. Not some lanky Tolkein-esque extra. Hell, even the phoned in tie-in video game did Mangog more justice in that regard.

Disney did it again, didn't they? I somehow expected that they wouldn't manage to keep the security that tight at the Philippines, but apparently they did.

It's only been a day. I think the D23 gifs took a few days to materialize online as well.

[up]Unless the guy who posted them somehow found the trailer online and then decided to make the quality look shitty for the hell of it, then yes, I'm pretty sure they were legit.

I'm pretty sure the trailer itself has yet to be seen outside of gif form.

[up][up]The trailer is marked, which suggests that it came from someone in the company. If it had been filmed during the event, there wouldn't be the name of someone plastered all over it.

[up] It's possible for the guy who recorded it to have a big enough ego to want everyone to know that he was the one who got the footage.

If his new show gets cancelled early then he'll have plenty of time to work on a new Blade film.

Honestly, at this point this comes off more as Snipes advertising in the press, trying to convince Marvel that there is a demand for this movie by pointing out positive reactions to those rumors. It is kind of annoying.

Yeah I feel like Snipes is just trying to call Marvel's bluff or something. Don't think there were every any serious concrete plans for the near future.

That's not exactly news that this point, considering every that talked about Marvel's plans for Spider-Man hinted at him being around 15-16.

15 year olds follow http://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/childdevelopment/positiveparenting/adolescence2.html

Peter was 15 when he got bit in the original spider-man movie.

Peter was 17 when he debuted in 1962

Flash was considered to be the same age as peter

One thing I don't think has been mentioned before:

If Spider-Man is 15 in Civil War, and assuming that the movies take place in the same year they're released, then he would be born in 2001. This means that he would only have one solo film in which he's a teenager because he would already be 18 and have graduated from high school by summer of 2019, which is when Phase 3 presumably ends.

Of course, adolescence typically ends after age 19, so he would still be a teenager for one more year after that, but the aspect of him being in high school wouldn't be able to be explored for that many movies.
