Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I really want Bill of Bills to show up in Ragnarok or Infinity War.

[up]I can see it happening if Thor were killed or at least taken out of commission instead of the 616 approach where Odin simply has a new hammer forged for him.

Not Beta Ray Bill. This guy. He's great.

Really, you could get a fantastic short just from his story if Marvel was still doing those. The mortal man who fell in love with the Asgardian maiden Kelda, traveled to Asgard to woo her, and gave his life defending the kingdom. The out-of-place redneck who's now visible any time we see a crowd shot of Valhalla.

Bill, whose father was Bill and his father was Bill. Bill who comes from a glorious line of Bills.

Bill, Son of Bill. Yes, he is awesome. But really, I think his tale could only be told once Asgard arrives at Broxton, Oklahoma.

Hey, that would be a neat storyline. In order to avoid the destruction of Asgard in Ragnarok, Thor brings it over to Earth and sets it floating above Broxton.

Broxton, Oklahoma.

And yes, Ragnarok absolutely should end with Asgard landing in Broxton.

I totally meant Oklahoma.

Also, the movie should totally end with someone putting up the sign "1 Asgard Way."

nah they said phillpinos are one of their biggest fan base or at least that's the confirmed reason

In what world is "They're one of our biggest fanbases" mutually exclusive from "They're part of a profitable box office territory?"

Yeah, the first paragraph in which the length of three paragraphs is spent using every possible word in the thesaurus to rephrase "Fuck rich people" over and over has convinced me not to read the rest of that.

I mean, "Fuck Rich People" is a sentiment I can get behind.

Especially in 2008.

So can I, but opening with a word-vomiting tantrum is not a good hook. It does not produce interest or provoke a response of, "This opinion is well-thought out and seems entirely reasonable. I wish to know more of what this chap has to say."

Angrish is not an engaging debate strategy.

The title made me go, "Interesting. I would like to hear more of this opinion. What insightful interpretation does this person bring to the table?"

Then I hit this wall of text:

I’ll get around to justifying that opening statement in a bit. But first, I just want to say… ahem… fuck Tony Stark. Seriously, fuck him. The arrogant, smug, privileged, sexist, immature, selfish, capitalist prick. The rich, preening, self-satisfied asshole. The callous, self-involved, vainglorious, narcissistic wanker. This guy isn’t charming or funny or lovable. He’s scum, masquerading as humankind’s best friend. He’s the 1% as saviour of the world, at a time when the 1% are directly and knowing destroying the world. He’s the smiling face of the anthropocene (or rather capitalocene) extinction. He’s genocidal imperialism as (lone) humanitarian intervention. He’s neoliberal capitalism and neoconservative foreign policy as a series of bad-boy quips. He’s private capitalist industry as heroism. He’s mega-wealth as heroism. He’s white male privilege as heroism. He’s militarism, imperialism and American exceptionalism as heroism. He’s the War on Terror as heroism. He’s everything sick and twisted and rotten and filthy and evil and insane and false about our world, presented to us as aspirational role-model. He’s Donald Trump in a Robert Downey Jnr. mask… no, scratch that… Robert Downey Jnr. is a rich, reactionary dick too, isn’t he… so we might as well say that Tony Stark is Robert Downey Jnr. in a Robert Downey Jnr. mask. In any case, Tony Stark is everything we need to tear down, ruthlessly demolish, trample on and bury, presented to us as the best of humanity.

and went, "Oh, it's angry gibberish. Gotcha." and stopped caring.

I mean, the next paragraph is that's the point of the character.

And a quote from Stan Lee that says that it was Tony Stark's inspiration.

I couldn't get through the essay.

It goes on far too long and I have slept far too few hours this week.

I wonder if his opinion of Iron Man 3 is any better but I'm not really able to swim up the waterfall to find out so.

Sorry.

I think the guy does make some good points (especially like how Tony still makes weapons) but the opening paragraph is hard to get past. He does admit he's not familiar with the comics, only the films, so maybe that affects his opinion as well.

It's an interesting article with a few good points, such as the movie's lack of addressing civilian casualties and the overly simplistic morality system at play. I can't agree with most of it, coming into it with my own biases, namely that I'm not a fan of Marxism (it kinda did ruin the lives of my family and all the other people the ideology claims to stand up for) and my long-held belief on capitalism is much like Churchill's on democracy, but it's still worth glancing over if you can stomach the unnecessary vitriol and off-topic potshots.
