Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

BTW, Rachel Mc Adams confirmed in the Wrap that she plays the female lead in Dr. Strange...any thoughts? I don't watch True Detective....

I think she'll be great. I haven't seen True Detective but I have seen her in other stuff and I think she'll do fine.

Clea's the first character that popped into my mind. Not sure though.

I liked her in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes movies, and from what I've seen she's pretty good in that Jake Gyllenhaal boxing movie. I think I've seen her in other stuff, but I can't quite remember what now.

Oh, right, I totally forget that she played Irene Adler.

I can't be the only one who thinks that this is hilarious.

I completely forgot she was in Mean Girls.

She might be playing Clea or she might actually be playing Linda Carter, the Night Nurse, since there was a rumor she was going to be in the Doctor Strange movie (they wanted to use her in Daredevil, but had to change her to Claire Temple instead). Strange and Night Nurse actually worked together in a really good book called Dr. Strange: The Oath.

If she plays Clea, that would be even more hilarious.

It will be interesting if she has a scene with both Cumberbatch and Downey.wink

Jude Law as Nightmare.

...holy crap, that would be awesome.

For Clea I'd prefer someone a little older looking, though she's got the right general look.

Rumor is they're pursuing Mads Mikkelson for Dormammu.

[up]Which would be funny, too, considering which role his brother played in Sherlock.

@alliterator

Not a bad choice. For Shuma Gorath, I always imagined Alan Rickman providing the voice over. Imagine a universe sized, one-eyed, tentacled horror from beyond gloating/talking down at Strange with Rickman's dry and sardonic wit.

And it'll actually be a proper trailer seemingly? Looks like a public trailer isn't too far off.

I mean, I hope.

Philippines seem like a strange place to hold the conference. Didn't think the market was as big there.

Curious what the security is going to be like.

Seeing as the trailer for the Jungle Book remake which debuted at D23 just came out, I think the official Civil War trailer should be incoming soon.
