Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Which is kind of weird, because he doesn't really have the associated angst, does he? It's a curious choice.

Actually, that's why they picked him (plus the fact that Greg Pak created him and Amadeus has been associated with the Hulk for about ten years now). Without the angst, Amadeus appparently loves being the Hulk, which is why the book is titled The Totally Awesome Hulk.

Since Mantis will be in Guardians 2

We don't know if Mantis will be in G2. Gunn has said that he's adding at least one female character, but we don't know who that is.

[up][up]Well then, maybe it wont be Mantis since Gamora is already the resident melee master of group and Groot is the resident plant manipulator. So either Phyla-Vell or Moondragon could end up being the "mage" character to round them out, possibly at the cost of Adam Warlock becoming a peripheral character like Yondu.

[up]Not the name she or (um') "she" would've picked....tongue

[up]"It's time the world knew her name"

lol at yet another "Who the hell is —insert less popular Marvel character here—" gag.

But great teaser either way. Got a few goosebumps from the purple miasma slowly encroaching on the scenery.

Wouldn't Mantis violate Gunn's rule that Star Lord should be the only human on the team?

[up]Drax also was an Earth human......in the source material.

Okay, I need some grammar lessons for non-native speakers here: Shouldn't it be "knows her name"? "knew her name" sounds off to me.

[up]"It's time he goes to the bathroom" sounds weird as opposed to "It's time for him to go to the bathroom".

Not necessarily. He went out of his way to clarify in his recent tweet that he wants Star-Lord to be the only human in the films from Earth. We already saw other humans in the first film, and some of them were even black.

It wouldn't be too out there to introduce Mantis as another human from somewhere in space (like Xandar) and still have her played by an Asian actress.

The ad on that promo was for Heroes Reborn, so I confused for a split second since the intro for Heroes Reborn talked about how anyone can be a hero.

Anyhow, can't wait, glad we have a date.

[up][up][up]That was not helpful at all, since "It is time he went to the bathroom" does sound just as odd.

I'd say knew her name in that instance. I can't adequately explain why but knows her name would just sound weird.

I think maybe, even if it's not 100% gramatically correct, "It's time the world knew her name" sounds better because it's snappier and rolls of the tongue. It basically just sounds slightly more dramatic than "It's time for the world to know her name."

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

I don't recall seeing other humans in GOTG besides the scene on Earth.

The Xandarians are Xandarians, not humans. Gotta wonder why they evolved to look and act exactly like humans though. tongue

When you are addressing a person, it sounds better to use present tense, i.e. "You know my name" or "I know your name."

When you are using the third person to refer to somebody, it sounds better to use the past tense, "She knew his name" or "They knew her name." This is due to the fact that most third-person stories are written in the past tense - present-tense stories are pretty rare - so it makes sense when we hear something that third-person, past tense.

So "It's time the world knew her name" sounds better to us than "It's time the world knows her name."

The difference is that it is actually appropriate for the character. Search for identity and recognition is part of Jessica's character arc, I believe. Chances are this won't be treated as a gag in story.

Not anymore than Drax.

I think the Xandarians look like humans because of the Celestials. And Thanos does for the same reason. I think he actually is a subspecies of immortal human called the eternals, but I'm not sure if that will ever be brought up

Holy crap, I totally missed this. Does this mean that Wolfram & Hart exists in the MCU?

[up][up][up]Correct. Specifically, they're called Deviants. And I think the Eternals will be brought up in-universe at some point (MCU would be commiting blasphemy if Thanos's backstory didn't involve the Eternals in any shape or form). In fact, I suspect Starlord's father may be one in this continuity.

Even in Ant-Man, "who the hell is Ant-Man?" stuff and jokes about his obscurity and name were common in the advertising but near completely absent in the movie itself.

Guardians runs with it humor-wise a bit with Star-Lord, but even so not all that much.

On the other hand, I think rising from obscurity from places no one is looking at is a running theme for all the Netflix heroes (except maybe Iron Fist), so... yeah. Like you said, in this case it actually makes sense.

Because apparently the Star-Lord of Spartax isn't a thing in the MCU.

I'm worried about Guardians 2. We know that J'Son won't be Peter's father. I'm worried they're going to make him a Celestial or something, and then the comics will retcon J'Son out and also make Peter a Celestial or something, and then the entire concept of Spartax will more or less fall by the wayside.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

[up] Is Spartax that important, though? From my understanding, J'son of Spartax is just a massive douchebag and that's it. He's not a particularly interesting or compelling character on his own.

[up]Though the MCU could potentially do more for him as a character than the comics ever did. Creative liberties can work wonders for obscure characters no one would otherwise care about.
