Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

  • (hours of arguing later)
  • STARK: I MADE you. When I met you, you were a tertiary character at best. My movie put your character on the map!
  • COULSON: You put me on the map? I put the Cinematic Universe on the map. I was charming and entertaining in your movies. I found Thor's hammer in Arizona. I welcomed Captain America back into the world. I made the franchise feel complete. The most you did was a brief walk-on in a Hulk movie nobody liked.
  • STARK: I gave up half of my screentime in Iron Man 2 to set up S.H.I.E.L.D. and introduce the Black Widow.
  • COULSON: And everyone hated that movie because of it. But when I appeared in another film, people were thrilled. My death scene was one of the biggest moments in Phase I.
  • STARK: And then we all did fine without you. You got your own little pocket of the MCU where nobody would bother you and we moved on. Meanwhile, Marvel paid out the nose to get me back for Civil War because everyone knows I'm the biggest cash cow we have.
  • COULSON: That movie wasn't even supposed to be about you. You butted into Cap's movie and you sidelined the Bucky plot to do so. At the end of the day, that's what this is about: consistency. We spent two years building me up as Director. Fury picked me. Doesn't that count for anything?
  • STARK: Fury promoted you so you could build a Helicarrier for him and he could ride triumphantly into Age of Ultron to join the rest of us in the big leagues. Face it, Coulson, even as Director, you were still just Fury's errand boy.
  • COULSON: Maybe. But people enjoy seeing me on a screen. Do you know what their biggest regret about Age of Ultron is? It wasn't harsh enough toward you.
  • STARK: No, their biggest regret is that it wasn't harsh enough toward Scarlet Witch.
  • COULSON: Fair enough, but you're a close second. People are excited for Civil War because they want to see you fall. Because they're as sick of you as they are of Loki. That's the only reason they're not raising more fuss about you hijacking the third Captain America movie's plot: because it means they might get to watch Cap break your face. Maybe I don't have as large of an audience as you do, but I have an audience who loves me and wants to see me succeed.

...

I'm going to end this here because I think Coulson won. I honestly can't think of anywhere further to go with that.

Did Thanos really say "Fine, I'll do it myself!" when he appeared in Age of Ultron? Like word-for-word?

Because if he did, then shoot, I'm gonna have to watch that movie again because that really slipped past me.

I figure that he's going to be making preperations for what will be Infinity War.

In the comics he's not just an unpretty face and space abs. He generally has a pretty extensive plan for how to do.

I don't know...if I were Thanos, I would simply keep an eye on earth but search for the other stones first. Because apparently earth is a prime place for them to turn up, which might be because there always has been more than one stone in the nice realms, meaning that they are most likely closer together than the others. And aren't the stones drawn to each other?

Ah, Wall E. Just about the only film I've ever seen that was able to make an epic, badass, awesome moment out of a fat man standing up.

And it was glorious.

Random prediction (and I guess hope)- I think Amadeus Cho will be coming to the MCU.

Basically, it's the combination of having Helen Cho (who hopefully will live, unlike her comic counterpart) and the fact that Amadeus is getting a new series.

As a comparison, note how Nick Spencer's Ant Man is tonally similar to the film (even though it keeps the continuity of the comics) and is written so that someone who has only seem the movie can follow it.

Similarly, I see in the Marvel comics thread that Patsy/Trish Walker, who is appearing on Jessica Jones is getting her own series.

I would suggest Steven Yeun for Amadeus.

Helen's inclusion and that one line in Winter Soldier point to him having some kind of role in a future movie. I'm kind of curious what they'll use him for though. We already have a ton of scientists in the MCU. Pretty much every major franchise has someone that's already established.

[up]Isn't Yeun too old?

[up][up]I predicted that but largely because A) East Asia has become a huge moneymaker and B) Marvel has an embarrassingly small pool of Asian characters overall, which is made much smaller by not having the X-Men.

The fact that they seem to be trying to up his profile outside of comics (he was in that Black Widow animated movie and the Spider-Man cartoon) makes me think you're onto something.

How old is Helen supposed to be? Maybe they'll make him her nephew this time around, and age him up.

As for who to play him, Ki Hong Lee might be a contender between Kimmy Schmidt and The Maze Runner boosting his profile. Plus he'll bring in fangirl dollars.

We aren't given an age for Helen but the actress looks like she's in her early thirties. Unless she had a child while she was still in High School Amadeus would be too old to be her son.

Hey, Cassie Lang is pretty young in this universe, so a younger Amadeus isn't out of the question. Set up for Young Avengers.

He has to be in High School according to Winter Soldier. That puts him in the 14-18 range.

edit: He'd also be a few years older than that if he showed up now since Winter Soldier was a year or two ago in universe.

Wait, was Amadeus mentioned in Winter Soldier? I know Sitwell mentioned a high school kid, but he never mentioned a name, so it could have been anyone.

I mean, Amadeus is 19 now in the comics, so they could cast a high school age actor, but still.

The issue of Asian representation in the MCU is a pretty big pickle. There really aren't a whole lot of non X-Men characters capable of being film leads aside from Colleen Wing, Shang-Chi, Jimmy Woo, Nico from Runaways, Silk or Mantis. The rest are either extremely bit characters, nonpowered, or really stereotypical. In some cases they can be boosted into major supporting cast or Ensemble Dark Horse status but turning them into leads by giving them the GOTG/Ant-Man treatment won't work.

Marvel has a few options: relying on Canon Foreigners, pushing new Asian heroes into their comics so by the time they're finished, or Race Lift. I'm not a fan of the last option in principle (look at what happened to New 52 Wally West) but it's probably the most tenable at this point, and it worked well in the case of Skye in Agents of SHIELD. One way to work it in without being jarring is to cast mixed-race actresses or do it with some of the more ambiguous looking characters, like Kate Bishop or Jessica Drew.

[up] The last thing is what I'm hoping they will do with Danny Rand. Casting an Asian or half-Asian actor would go a long way to getting rid of the Mighty Whitey trope that's part of Iron Fist.

[up][up][up]He never used a name but I remember hearing it was a reference when the movie came out. I think Amadeus is from the state he mentioned.

As observed elsewhere, Iron Fist has a terrible situation in that making him white means he's a Mighty Whitey, making him Asian plays into All Asians Know Kung Fu. The suggested solution is to make him another race (like latino or black), or split the difference and make him mixed lineage.

Funny. Black actor announced as Baron Mordo; no one loses their shit. The Mandarin? "You got your fucking One-Shot. Now stop bringing him up or else Asia (we assume) wil get mad!"
