Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Anyway, now that the creative committee is dissolved, maybe the environment would be better for it.

Um, didn't that get Jossed sometime ago?

[up] Actually, it was Jossed. The Creative Committee wasn't dissolved, it just doesn't have the same power as before.

I'm just waiting for Doctor Strange to come out and for the dissolution of the creative committee to be credited for the fact that magic is suddenly allowed to exist in the MCU, a claim that will be wrong for several reasons and reignite the Magic v. Science debate.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

@discussion about introducing the Greek Gods into the MCU: They could have them be or descend from Ancient Asgardians who stayed on Earth instead of having them be a completely unconnected repeat of Asgard.

[up] But that just makes it weirder. I mean, why can't you have two groups of godlike aliens who both inspired groups on Earth?

we already saw magic. ant man and agents of shield already showed you it. for example Dr. Croit could use darkforce and Scott Lang went into the quantum realm. one is a type of negative energy that grants people its power and the other is the place where such an energy can come from. meanwhile some aliens learned how to apply that through their technology and somehow gained other abilities without said technology, which hasnt been explained yet. this leaves us with sorcerer supremes. they can use anything simply by will power alone. your basically controlling science itself EXCEPT we have things like anthropomorphic personifications... i guess they fill in the universe is alive theory. shows like Cosmos and Through the Wormhole ask a bunch of questions. Dr. Strange's duty is to answer them obviously not realistically

"Are you watching the Cosmos series? That’s magic, [the quantum physics]. It’s unbelievable. If somebody knew how to tap into that stuff, what’s the difference between that and magic?" - Kevin Feige

theres evidence out there already guys. we just need to dabble into it BAM BAM BAM BABY. stop being subtle

note none of this excludes the supernatural. blade may or may not still have a chance at happening

That's the one where the Civil War is resolved through the marriage of Steve Rogers and Natasha Stark, right?

I agree that Guillermo del Toro would have been a great pick for Doctor Strange. He certainly seems better suited for the film than the director of some low-quality horror movies that Marvel has got now.

They went with a director known for low quality horror films because he's far more likely to play nice with them. Del Toro has his fingers in a lot of pies and constantly has a bunch of projects in some stage of pre-production. If he disagreed with Marvel he could just flip them the bird and go make something else. (And in fact I think he was even in talks to helm Thor at one point and left because he wanted a Thor movie more in line with his tastes).

A lesser known, up and coming director is going to be far more likely to shut their mouth and do what they're told without rocking the boat.

The staff for Dr. Strange worries me. Neither the director nor the writers have an even remotely track record. Thus said, I guess they wanted someone who does horror movies, which are not about gore or jump scares. And currently there aren't really that many directors out there who do it...though too bad that they didn't go for Jennifer Kent. But then, I guess they settled on a director before she drew attention to herself.

not just dr strange but spiderman too. both teams appear meh based on their records. i liked the most recent sinister in contrast to all those paranormal activity/insidious films and their rip off/spin offs. all the best horror movies have been indies anyway for the past few years. ever watched https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rIZbq7V2xvs? but theres really nothing out there like a dr strange story apart from del toro stuff. derrickson posted lovecraftian stuff so at least he hinted at a weird direction

I'd kind of like Don Coscarellito direct Dr. Strange.

That is good news...I don't like the idea of a committee interfering in a project (because that is always an unnecessary struggle), but I do think that the input of actual comic book people can be helpful. They shouldn't have the last say, but suggestions can be helpful.
