Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up] I mean, there is such a thing called "space fantasy." See: Star Wars and the nebulous "magic" of the Force. (Don't talk about medichlorians. Just...don't.)

[down].......The elves (ELVES!!) had fucking pulse rifles and singularity grenades. The "fantasy" aspect was getting slowly murdered by its partner, "science" via strangulation at that point.

What were you expecting the elves to use? Chocolate frosting guns and cookies?

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

Right, but they were elves wielding energy rifles. The only thing that could have been more space fantasy than that would be if Gandalf came riding out on a spaceship Shadowfax and fought a Balrog with his energy staff.

Also Malekith is, essentially, an "ancient wizard returned from being sealed" archetype (like Vigo or Sauron) capable of turning his minions into demonic-looking berserkers, who plans to use a ancient Artifact of Doom and the alignment of the universe in a ritual to trigger ten thousand years of darkness an age of eternal night. He's definitely a character in the style of a fantasy story, even if his people use more sci-fi tools at times.

If him and his people had gotten some adequate development, the fantasy angles probably would've gotten more and more evident.

In fact, one of the things that I think Dark World got perfectly right was playing a science fiction universe with the tone and sensibilities of a classic fantasy story (including the way Earth itself is treated, which was much better than how Earth impacted the plot in the first once).

[up][up]It wouldn't have been a staff. It would've been a blatant plasma cannon. That's how little they gave a shit about meshing a strong fantasy theme in with the sci-fi.

Why are you acting like this is some problem with the movie? It seems to be pretty intentional given Thor's insistence on blurring the line between science and magic.

[up]Thor 1 did a decent job blurring the line. Thor 2 made that line noticeably more solid.

Magitek isn't really a new concept in fantasy stories.

And, again, let's not forget that space fantasy has been a thing for quite a while.

[up][up] I think what the elves (barring maybe Kurse) were packing was strictly tech. Or something that wouldn't exactly baffle Stark. Im sorry but when you introduce a race with "tech" that can create a bridge that can be travelled by horseback to anywhere in the universe and can make a hammer summon elemental storms, be called to its user from ANY distance, and judge who has the right to even pick it up (depending on what Odin says to it), you've kind of got to stay fairly consistent with that level of bizarreness, especially when introducing a race that's supposed to be as old as and rival the Asgardians. Thor 2 didn't and settled instead for guns, grenades, and spaceships.

the tech of asgard is fantasy looking, but nothing else, even in agent of SHIELD and asgardian(sorry I forget her name) look the computer of shield saying it look like a old version of their in asgard., so for them magic is sciene

Hey you guys remember how I thought it would be awesome if Guillermo del Toro directed the Inhumans movie?

Well, turns out he was already involved in the MCU in...something.

TL;DR: Kevin Feige actually got GDT to write a pilot for a new Hulk TV show, but they pretty much nixed it to do Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

To be fair, I really don't see how they could possibly do a CGI Hulk on a TV show budget. And if they weren't going with the CGI Hulk then...how exactly where they going to do that since they already did the CGI Hulk in the movies?

If Del Toro should have directed anything in the MCU, it's Doctor Strange. It'd allow him to go truly crazy with the magical creatures and mythos.

Listen, I like Guillermo Del Toro, but I don't quite understand the Internet's insistence that Del Toro has to (or should) direct everything. And I mean everything.

[up]Not everything. Mostly fantasy/horror, and fantasy/sci-fi/horror combos. Dark fantasy and Lovecraft-inspired films are more specific examples of what Del Toro has a particular knack for.

[up][up]is also the fact that he bring some strange feel to his fantasy story, like Hellboy or Pan laberynt, or how in pacific rim he "bring his inner mexican"(his own worlds, not mine) so having him direct Dr strange, he could bring his strange visual to the movies.

Del Toro wouldn't have worked in the MCU. He likes to do things a certain way and it's clear by now the MCU likes directors who are more willing to bend to a certain studio viewpoint rather than do what they want.

I feel he'd manage, depending on the property they gave him. He wouldn't work for something like the Avengers (where the Marvel hand is stronger), but for Doctor Strange he'd be pretty at home.

As long as the film has a combination of at least two of the following: tentacled beasties, runic symbols, sewers, clockwork mechanisms, and jars of organs, Del Toro is 90% likely to do it. [lol]

[up] Doctor Strange would be guaranteed to have at least two of those.

Anyway, now that the creative committee is dissolved, maybe the environment would be better for it.

Oh God! Natural light!
