Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Now I want to see a Looney Tunes-style montage of people trying and failing to find "Mjolnir loopholes" in increasingly convoluted ways. It'd be an awesome Marvel One-Shot if they were still making those.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

On the other hand, once Thor was worthy, he didn't even need to touch Mjolnir, it just flew right into his hands.

Like, picture a scene of Thor putting Mjolnir on a table, and then Tony and Rhodey try to lift the table, and the instant they grab the legs, Mjolnir immediately smashes a hole clean through and lands on the floor.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

It's because he died for your sins.

It's unclear how, exactly, this not only restored his Worthiness but also gave him back his ability to recall Mjolnir before restoring his powerset or why it constitutes overcoming his fatal arrogance but, y'know, Jesus symbolism typically comes before consistent storytelling.

Thor being able to summon it makes it seem like it has some kind of psychic abilities. That might even be how it determines worthiness. When something tries to move it it quickly scans its mind. If it detects no mind(in the case of an inanimate object) it just moves naturally. If it detects an unworthy individual it remains rooted to the spot. If it detects a worthy individual it allows them to manipulate it normally. This might even be how Cap was almost able to move it. He was so close to being worthy that Mjolnir wasn't finished scanning him before it started to move.

Yeah, the budging of Mjolnir is pretty unambiguously the Hammer going, "Hmmmmmmmm nope," rather than the hard no everyone else got.

[up][up][up]I dont think Thor recalled it. He honestly felt he was about to die and was busy saying his peace with Jane.

[up][up][up]I think it's meant to Parallel the fight on Jotunheim.

Just as hopeless, but this time Thor decided NOT to get his best friends killed, sacrificed himself, and stopped the violence and bloodshed with him.

Which, by activating the JESUS METAPHOR CLAUSE inherent in DAMN NEAR EVERYTHING made him absolutely worthy.

Tony would have been too, had Hulk not interrupted his Jesus Metaphor.

I still feel like Cap not lifting the Hammer was a conscious choice.

Cap: *Thinking* Oh, crap. I don't wanna ruin everyone's fun. *Drops the hammer* Oh, darn. I wasn't worthy. You win, Thor.

My various fanfics.

It didn't "restore" his worthiness, because he wasn't worthy beforehand. It was just that the Worthiness Enchantment hadn't been placed on it by Odin until Thor was exiled.

This is in contrast with the comics where, I believe, Mjolnir has always had a Worthiness Enchantment and Young Thor was shown as really wanting to lift it but unable.

  • TONY: (hits the ground with a thud, breaking all the bones)
  • CAP: Why didn't you catch him?!
  • HULK: He was doing a thing. Hulk not want to ruin it.
  • THOR: Wait, something's happening.
  • (Mjolnir whips out of Thor's hand, lands on Iron Man's chest, and heals all his injuries)
  • TONY: (wakes up coughing) What happened?
  • THOR: You activated Mjolnir's Jesus Clause. It rewarded your self-sacrifice.
  • TONY: Okay. Why can't I get up?
  • THOR: It still doesn't approve of the womanizing. Or the drinking.
  • TONY: It's a magic Viking hammer. The womanizing and drinking should make me its patron god.
  • THOR: Normally I'd agree, but Jesus Clause.
  • TONY: Can we get a new Thor? Ours is defective.

No, no, it should have gone like this:

  • TONY: (hits the ground with a thud, breaking all the bones)
  • CAP: Why didn't you catch him?!
  • HULK: That's what he gets for poking Banner with stick.

Mjolnir: somehow less head-splittingly confusing than Cap's shield. [lol]

Actually, the current Thor comic (where Jane is Thor) implies that Mjolnir is actually alive and that's how it judges who is worthy and not.

I think I like this explanation the most. Being sentient would explain how it can want to be wielded by Thor, Vision and a coat hanger at the same time.

It would also explain how Cap could budge it.

Going back to the discussion on whether including the explicitly supernatural parts of the Thor mythos in Thor: Ragnarok would conflict with the so far Magitek depictions of Asgard, remember in the first movie, Thor didn't specifically say that magic is just advanced science, but that on Asgard, they are one and the same. My interpretation of that has always been that instead of Asgard being so advanced their science looks like magic, Asgard is so advanced their magic can be scientifically understood.

So the planet Earth is worthy too, since it can still revolve around the sun with Mjolnir sitting on it.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

[up] Well, I mean, that would also imply that the universe is worthy, since it's expanding, too.

Or that Mjolnir obeys the Law of Conversation of Momentum.

I mean, they never said that she was right, she just assumed she was.
