Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

"What I really want to see in Civil War is Steve telling off Thanos. I can see it, Thanos standing there, almighty and Steve being all "But we will never stop fighting you!"

then he meant Infinity War.

ok someones contract has to end by the time IW is over, so how about time to purge... seems like the best option to me to knock off 2-3 avengers

That's assuming nobody renews their contracts.

In the wake of Feige directly working with Disney, I figure actors will have an easier time getting more lucrative contracts.

Edit: Also, I feel like we do need less Avengers, but not right now, but after Infinity War.

Like, focus on other superhero teams.

If he doesn't die in Civil War I'm fairly confident Steve will make a heroic sacrifice in Infinity War. Tony might just retire but that doesn't work for Cap.

civil war would end Robert's contract because it only goes up to six movies and this is his sixth though marvel told him to co-star so i guess it doesnt count if he's also in IW.

evan's contract ends with CW because that's 6 films.

hemsworth's contract ends after IW 2 cuz that's 6 films.

hiddleston ends IW 2 as well. 6 films

samuel has 2 more films. hes not in civil war.

scarlett has a 3 avenger deal, so IW marks the end.

blah blah blah. yea all the old avengers are about to go bye bye if their actors don't renew. however its interesting Sebastian has a 9 contract deal... hnmmm

yes the MCU after IW 2 will be interesting especially when black bolt shows up. i hope Drew returns for RA. we got AM 2 DS 2 BP 2 SM 2 IH 2 GOG 3 MS 2 for sequels during phase 4... new franchises? well i can think of BLACK WIDOW AND HAWKEYE for now lol but only because i really want their freaking solo movie. do you think by then marvel can get back F4?

Like, focus on other superhero teams.

That would be interesting. What teams do you guys think would work best in the MCU? So far we've got the Avengers, the Guardians of the Galaxy, the Inhumans, and the Defenders on Netflix. We can't use the X-Men or the Fantastic Four, so that leaves:

  • Eternals (more cosmic/god-type characters, although they might skew a little too close to Asgard/Inhumans).
  • Invaders (if they want to go the flashback routine, although I guess this all depends on if they can get Namor's rights)
  • Runaways and Young Avengers (for a more teen-oriented movie/series)
  • Thunderbolts (probably the best chance for getting made in Phase 4)
  • New Warriors (...eh, probably not)
  • Nextwave, Agents of H.A.T.E. (I WILL GIVE THEM ALL OF THE MONEY)

The way to do a Nextwave movie would probably be like Vs.

Just ludicrous action and a plot that doesn't really matter because there are zombies to punch.

Nextwave would like to remind the audience that dragging insane, corrupt police officers who change into giant killer robots into an alleyway and shooting them a lot is very bad and not the Marvel way. And also still illegal in most states.

Nextwave: A tale of five pirate superheroes stopping the terrorist cell S.I.L.E.N.T. today masquerading as the Beyond Corporation from product-testing WMDs on American cities and if that actually made sense to you tell mommy or daddy to get you the special pills.

Still wondering if they'll ever dust off that Runaways script they had a while back.

I wonder if they're going to use A-Force in anything. Would be a good way to debut a whole bunch of female superheroes at once and test the waters for them before launching solo films. Only thing is it's recent, probably too recent, and runs the risk of pushing them too hard when it's still too early to tell if people like them or if they're a Dork Age. The movies have done as well as they have because they've got hindsight to help out with 70 years of storylines.

The rumor now is that the split with Perlmutter came from Disney being really unhappy that Age of Ultron grossed less than the first movie

Oh golly, it only made 1.4 billion instead of 1.5. Yeah, that's something to get upset about.

I blame Whedon and his weird insistance on having the movie be one minute shorter than the first Avengers

I mean, that's not the whole problem but it sure is a goat

Actually, after it came out, Whedon himself said that he thought it needed more time and that he should have let the movie "breathe."

@xbimpy: For the record, Cap did have such a moment in the original Infinity Gauntlet story.

It was pretty badass.

@Maple Samurai: How do you think I felt at the lack of "Ultron, we would have words with thee"?

Something clearly changed at some point in the creative process, because by his own account he said he wanted it to be smaller and more personal than the first one, and it ended up being bigger (and more expensive) in just about every sense.

[up]Shoulda introduced the Masters of Evil for the climax instead of a massive army of mooks like the first. Facing down an army isn't nearly as personal or localized as a small squad of villains, each with his/her own beef against a certain Avenger,

Shoehorning the Masters of Evil into Age of Ultron seems like a recipe for disaster, with one of two outcomes. Either the Masters of Evil as a group overshadow Ultron, who can and should (even if he arguably wasn't) be a threat all on his own (and in which case they might as well make the movie "Avengers: Masters of Evil" instead), or what should be a fleshed out collection of villains with grudges against the Avengers just turns into a slightly more colorful mook squad for Ultron.

In either case, one party isn't being done justice.

I think they meant making the Masters of Evil the villain instead of Ultron.

I've got fanfics for Frozen, Spectacular Spider-Man, Crash Bandicoot, and Spyro the Dragon.

Then why specify that you're introducing them for the climax of the movie?

Hiddleston's contract is only fulfilled in Infinity war 2 if he is actually in both infinity war movies. And we have no idea how the contract of Scarlet Johansen lucks like. She is very tight lipped in this regard. I would like to keep The Avengers around...that doesn't mean that I necessarily want to see a Thor 4 or Iron Man 4, but if they, for example, decide to tell the secret invasion storyline, I really want Cap in there.
