Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Nebula wasn't competent? She was certainly more competent than Ronan and was smart enough to ditch everybody.

I don't know Gomorrah seemed far more competent throughout. Admittedly it has been a while since I have watched the film but she also never came off as much of a threat to me, unlike Ronan who did seem like a threat to me even before he got the gem.

As an individual fighter she was very competent, however Ronan relied on firepower so all she got was a Designated Girl Fight, I think. Don't remember that much of the movie.

Anyway, AOS has Jiaying, Agent Carter season 2 will have Madame Masque, and Luke Cage has whoever Alfre Woodard is playing and they might cross over into the films so there's that at least.

Thing is didn't Captain Marvel get planned well before all this stuff? Wouldn't Perlmutter have to have been okay with that? I mean sure now it could be done without his okay, but it's been in the pipeline for a while now.

Yes. I've mentioned before that Captain Marvel is very delicately placed, however. It's sandwiched between Infinity War 1 and 2. Given that both of those movies are guaranteed to hit the one-billion mark, that means that even if Captain Marvel fails as hard as Perlmutter believes all female-driven movies will, there's a financial buffer preceding and following it.

Captain Marvel was originally slated for June 6, 2018 alongside Infinity War Part 1's May 4 release. Had things gone to plan, the first half of Infinity War would actually still be in theaters when Captain Marvel hit. With the Spider-Man movie, it's taken up the November 2 slot from Inhumans and given its slot to Black Panther, while the Infinity War films have not been affected at all.

[up][up]The bad press Marvel got for not doing a female lead movie and DC announcing Wonder Woman might have given this project the last push.

So I watched Age of Ultron on a flight back to US.

Basically, how utterly mediocre.

Everything felt so light and stakeless and it was impossible for me to get really involved in this movie. It lacked the "HOLY SHIT" factor that The Avengers and...pretty much all the biggest/acclaimed action movies that came out this year.

I watched Furious 7 almost right after that (before that, I watched Princess and the Frog, which I enjoyed more than Ultron). Boy, no wonder why Furious 7 did better than Ultron, both critically and commercially.

That said, the Hulkbuster scene was incredible and Hawkeye and Captain America gotten much more awesome. There is a lot of heart in character relationship, which I appreciated. Of course, the scene with Bruce and Natasha sucked. And of course, how can I not talk about the whole "infertility " "monster" issue. Basically, I do understand what the writer/director intended, but poor choice of words there.

On Ultron.

-sighs-

Okay. I am going to respect the opinion of people who liked the more conflicted and human aspect of him, but I feel that after a host of underwhelming and forgettable Phase 2 villains, this film needed more intimidating villain.

Basically, it needed the trailer's version of Ultron.

But then again, this made 1.4 billion dollars, so what do my opinion matters anyway. -shrugs-

Well, at least Infinity War has Thanos FINALLY GETTING HIS FAT ASS OFF THAT GODDAMN CHAIR so I can expect some intimidating villain and stakes, right?

Right?

Yeah. In the end, MCU Ultron will be remembered more for his snark than his menace.

And do we really need more snark in this series? I mean is there any prominent Avenger who doesn't snark? Well, there's obviously Hulk but that's more of because he can't snark.

[up] Vision's a bit more of The Comically Serious. And Thor is more boisterous than snarky.

I'm pretty sure Thor is getting snarkier as the entries go.

And really, even with that, that's majority of the Avengers who are snarkers. Frankly, I think Iron Man is quite enough.

[up]It probably won't happen, since the Avengers fight comedians and not threats, but I would love to see the Avengers go into the first fight with Thanos joking and snarking at everything, feeling good and utterly confident that they can handle this after the robot. Thanos just gives a Slasher Smile and casually strides up to them and demands the gem from Vision. Tony cracks a joke and the Avengers attack....and Thanos.Tears.Through Them. He swats Hulk away, beats down Thor, smashes Cap's shield and his arm, blasts away Hawkeye and Widow, throws Cap's broken body at Falcon and then crushes Tony, just crushing his bones and armor. Etc, Etc.

With the Avengers defeated and lying on the ground beaten and broken, Thanos then rips the gem out of Vision's forehead, puts it in the gauntlet and leaves.

THAT is how I would introduce Thanos to the Avengers, not by him being a comedic fool, but by showing that Thanos is an unstoppable threat that they can't just run over like Ultron and Loki.

Plus, Tony being beaten to a pulp would be a good enough excuse for him to get the Extremis Treatment.

Like I said though, he'll probably be a snarky comedian. Ugh. sad

I wish MCU had a villain like the Joker, as in Nolan's Batman series.

I mean yeah, even Joker snarked as well (given the name...) but it was more of black humor that actually made him look even more intimidating.

[up][up]Bullseye in Season 2 of Daredevil may give you just that. As for Thanos, a dry wit tinged with disturbing implications (think Shere Khan from Disney's Jungle Book) as opposed to Iron Man levels of snark would suit him well,

I loved Age of Ultron and I thought Ultron himself was pretty menacing. The fact that he sounded so human made him seem even creepier to me. In pretty much all the previous incarnations, he sounds monotone, like Brainiac, but in this one he actually sounded like an Artificial Intelligence, not just a computer.

Ultron LIFTED AN ENTIRE COUNTRY INTO THE SKY

Just cause he had a sense of humour doesn't mean he wasn't a threat.
